The Ultimate Future For Elite Dangerous

I was just wondering let's say frontier stops supporting E.D in 10 years from now and 12 years from now i decide i want to pick the game back up (just recently picked duke nukem 3d back up), will i be able to do this or no?

No unfortunately the online only DRM is a sham that means this game is nothing more than a long term rental that expires the minute they decide to shut down the server.

I'd be more concerned with where it will be in 4 months if they don't make the MMO side more newbie friendly

I dont think you have any concerns at all on that front. They said they were already into profitability based on beta backers alone, its getting pretty great reviews across the boards, and since its not a sub based system a high retention rate isnt all that important to their bottom line. I would argue that if they make it any more noob friendly than it already is they will totally kill the spirit of the Elite franchise that built the fanbase they have, but Im guessing you probably dont want to hear that.

They have said if that ever happens they will give the server code out so people can host it.

Well I stand corrected then, that is truly excellent news as there will always be a fanbase for the Elite franchise willing to run it.

I am not worried about it really, but noone can say for sure either way. I wouldn't stress too much over it.

Maybe still available in 10yrs .. well what about 20.. 30 ... 40 yrs or longer .. nothing is guaranteed in this world.

Like DraigUK said, they have said they would release the server code for us to setup our own, but even then .. who is to say decades from now we will still want to play or it will run on future tech.

Too many variables lol :)

You are very badly misinformed and spreading that misinformation. DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a method of preventing the product being duplicated using copy protection which ED does not have. The online-only requirement has absolutely nothing to do with DRM which has been stated many times by FD and people here in the forums. Commodity, ship, module prices/availability, missions and a lot more is done by the servers not the client and without the server the client cannot function.

This is absolutely no different from any other online game. The only difference is, as DraigUK says, FD will give us the server end if they ever shut down the servers which they announced before the game was even released. I can only think of one other company that did this and only after they shut down.

Seriously, the complaints about offline mode need to stop. Personally I think they should just bodge in some basic code so you have basic trading and release it just to shut these people up. Offlinegaters: "But it is boring, there is no story, no missions and everything is static". FD: "We know, that is why we withdrew it".

There are plenty of MMO's of far worse quality (looking at them -now-) that are still up and running well over a decade later despite having a tiny playerbase.

As long as it remains profitable to run, then it will be continued. Besides, in 10 years time FD may have another flagship product that could take over the cost of running the servers for ED.

FD have said everything get's archived, and when/if they have to shut down, the server software will be released. So, people will be able to still play after a shutdown.

Good enough for me, i'm barely worrying about anything happening next week, let alone 10 years from now.

Well, I didn't like it when I found out about the whole internet connection required. I've even refused to buy other games that had that requirement. I was going to recommend this game to my brother who also plays EVE when he's in port, for something to play while at sea.

I'm glad they decided to release it, when it comes time to shut down the servers. So when we're anticipating Elite 5's release 15 or so years from now, we'll be able to play something to sate us till then, like I did with FFE. heh.

Still though, with no monthly sub, to be able to rent, as you suggest, the game for years all for a grand total of $60, that's not a bad deal at all.

Yes and that is cool, however we should not delude ourselves and we should know that if the company goes out of business then the server code is an asset and the liquidators will decide what to do with it which very well may not be to release it for free.

Also if say EA were to buy out FD would they then honour that promise ?

So take that future promise with a pinch of salt.
