On mortality...

What is the fictional excuse for our respawns?

In days of yore, you would auto eject if you had the escape pod. If you didn't I believe your game and save was over.

Then there was the option to scoop up ejected pilots and sell them, I think. Or maybe I confuse this with an early X game.

But to the point: how do we get from dead to re-lifed?

1) You auto eject and survive

2) If FD implement 'Ironman' mode (something they put forward as a possibility) then this is exactly how it will work...Eject or lose everything.

3) You could scoop up pilots to sell as slaves in earlier Elite, but I don't remember the AI being capable of doing this to you. What would happen to a CMDR if you could do this to him in ED? Should he live out his life as a slave never to play again?

4) See '1)'

Yup, I can confirm the few times my ship has gone "BOOM" - I've heard the on board systems go "Eject, Eject" just before the fireworks.
I don't think it does this any more. I think the intention was that ejecting was going to be manual at some point.
.
I think escape pods should exist in the game, you should see them pop out of the ship then FSD away before you can get a shot in at them (assuming it isn't your pod that is escaping).

Yep.
Magic escape pod at the moment.
When Iron Man mode comes along you'll have to press the button yourself. If you're too slow, that's it. The end. The End.
I'm looking forward to it.
Much more risk and responsibility involved.

Once they have the walking around stuff sorted out, they could have an escape from slavery mini game.

Nice idea. Of course the CMDR could be caught smuggling you and you are freed, or his ship destroyed for it's bounty and you are once again ejected in a pod :)

The game manual actually answers the OP's question quite well. Essentially, your escape pod automatically ejects you when the power plant reaches critical and initiates a micro jump to your last docked station.

Hmm...I think you just figured out what to do with "PvP n00b hunters" crowd. ;)

An earlier Elite Dangerous? I don't recall that in Elite, Frontier, or First Encounters.
I seem to recall friends who played Eve (I never have) talking about scooping up pods with pilots in. Are you thinking of that?

We are all immortal because if we somehow died doing things that should kill us the forums would be on fire with people complaining that the game is "broken"
