STEP BY STEP guide on how to make your first million (trading)

Ok so your struggling to make credits, you want that fancy new ship? here is a little guide to get you started.
.
.
1) start off by taking a mission from the bulletin board, it's best to take a mission to deliver goods or a courier mission, as this way you don't have to source the goods yourself and it's basically free money. Keep doing these mission types until you are able to afford the hauler, which retails at 52,720 credits, and make sure you can maximise its cargo capacity (fit the best cargo racks for each slot available, without losing your shields) so it can carry 16T of cargo, shouldn't cost you much more than the initial charge of the ship. Now you need to make sure you can afford to fill those 16 slots with cargo, so take that into consideration. (you can also do bounty hunting if your are a confident pilot in your sidewinder, but this little guide is for new players who are not combat ready)
.
.
2)Once you have your hauler kitted out for trading this is where it gets fun and you start to see the money coming in. Start off with simple trades for example, take mineral extractors from an industrial system to an extraction system and on the return trip take the best metals that were in demand from the industrial system back with you (cobalt is a good low end starter) 2 systems to get you started are THIIN and GEAWENKI take the extractors from Thiin and bring metals back from Geawenki. the stations to use are "Knapp vision in Geawenki" and "Brandenstein Orbital in Thiin" keep running this back and forth until you are able to move on to the higher priced metals like gold and indium, ofc always checking which ones are selling for the best price before you leave Brandenstein.
.
.
3)After following the first 2 steps you will soon be able to afford your cobra MKIII and 40T of cargo space, then you can simply repeat steps one and two and your first 1 million will shortly follow. Always make sure you can cover your insurance costs and that when you buy a new ship you can afford to fill its cargo hold and fit the needed modules.
.
.
BONUS TIPS - Always check the bulletin board every time you dock to see if there is any high priced easy transport missions or to see if anyone is buying the materials you are already carrying. There may also be courier missions to the same systems that you are already visiting that require no cargo hold space.

Be a real trader and sell your shields in the Hauler and get 20T cargo space. Make that 1.5 million and get the Type 6 with 104T cargo. Trade the heck out of that ship and get the Type 9, then the big bucks start rolling in!

Also, sell the shields off the Sidewinder and get 10T cargo!

heh no shields for a newbie could cause trouble :p

Did pretty much the same as the original poster. I'm doing the "Type 6 Grind" right now and only making about 100k a round trip with regular items but I'm up to 4mil now. Taken a few weeks but if you spend a little time and watch for those missions I can make 1mil a night of playing for a few hours.

Occasionally you will find a nice juicy $150k mission which helps.

Saving up for that Asp but may keep the Type 6 as the money maker since the Asp is apparently so expensive to run.

So we have a Commander who calls himself a 'Imperial Assassin' writing trading tut's for new Commander's and telling them to remove their ships sheilds?
Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

I am a Trader/Explorer and have NEVER removed my shields on my ships.
Be smart, be safe.

I see nothing wrong with it! That extra space means extra cargo = more profit.

Oh, and doing this in the Sidewinder and Hauler, I was killed ~3 times. Not by players, but by the AI. Just depends how brave you are sir :)

Yup. I did one run in my Hauler after I dumped the shields for that extra 4T of cargo. Immediately interdicted by a Cobra. That was really close. Made it to my stop, sold my cargo, put the shields right back on! (I do leave the gun off, so that I'm not tempted to try and fight.)

I will add, I really liked the Adder. More guns and maneuverability over the cute little Hauler. I even picked up a few bounties in it when I got interdicted.

Traded my way up to half a million, and bought a Cobra. I'm happy now!

Once you're a confident flyer, you can toss them, especially in a kitted Type-6. Those things have practically unlimited boosting if interdicted, and you're only other danger is docking. Doing it earlier, in a smaller ship would be even more beneficial in terms of cargo space (percentage) increased, but the risk is much greater (imho). Above the Type-6, I don't see myself running shield-less.

hmmm where did I say remove shields ? good skills

2 systems to get you started are THIIN and GEAWENKI

If you are in that neck of the woods it might be worth checking Nima as there was a fairly good route between Euler Orbital and Rushworth Terminal ferrying Superconductors and Gallite if I remember correctly. I haven't been trading for a few weeks now so I don't know if it is still there after the recent market disruptions. That got me into my Viper very quickly.

I am at step 1 and after struggling to find any missions whatsoever and pulling my hair out trying to trade commodities around, I simply went exploring, which yields a constant income. Not as much as trading (probably) but at least it's going fairly well and I like how it goes.

With the cost of insurance on a Type 9, my shields are A rated. When I was in my hauler, I ditched weapons and shields, upgraded my core to maximize jump distance. Made much more then it being stock.

Oi, dont want any old riff raff over here at Thiin. Brandenstein and Knapp vision are mine i tell you, mine!! Unless you are buying a permit off me of course?

Good post btw... Rep to that man!

I do the same thing with my hauler. dropped shields and scanner 22T cargo space. I have upgraded my propulsion systems to aid in escape and I maximized my profits per run.
