It's not about how many kills, it's about the weight of the value of your targets. If all you're doing is hunting cobras and vipers, you're not going to hit expert for a while.

I think it has to do with your ships value too. I'm interested to see if I can get it to go up quicker if I go back to using an unupgraded sidewinder.

I've been knocking down Competent + Condas for a while now. I know it weighs the talent level of your target, does it weight target ship too?

I'm pretty sure it is entirely based on money made on bounties and war bonds. Kills mean nothing, it is all based on money made killing

I thought so, too, until I gained a rank in the field before even cashing in the new bounties. I hit expert around 700. I know I was somewhere between 600 and 700 when I was still competent, and while hunting pirates and I looked at my reputations, realized I must have become Expert during that very hunting session, and found my kills only a handful above 700.

575 kills and 1 mil in bounties later, and I'm still competent. It's okay though. Because I made some cash tonight. Merry (or Happy) Christmas to all!

I've got abut 3.5 mill in bounties and am still competent. 0 assassinations on the stats too, even though I've completed them.

stats are a bit bunged up. Apparently my highest bounty was 15k which is laughable, no cash spent on ships despite buying a few, and I know for a fact I have had to pay more than 785 creds for fines.

Around 1.8 mil in collected bounties, been a novice forever. This seems really counterintuitive. IIRC in the original Elite you progressed really quickly at first and that made sence, I doubt anyone who defeated even one opponent can be considered harmless after all.

616 kills, 3.5mil in bounty collections with the rating of expert.. It seems to vary wildly since I received the expert rating at 510 kills.
