Is Rare trading really worth it?

I've been reading alot about people making outrageously large amounts of credits, specifically trading in rare commodities.

I've got 108t of cargo space, but after 6 jumps to get to a far away station, all they will sell me is 12t.

Now to make money on that measly 12t I've got to travel about 6 more jumps / around 150y away.

How is that going to bring me 25million credits like some others are saying is possible?

Is this because they've been exploiting bugs that are now 'allegedly' fixed or am I missing something else?

It's a good way to start off, but when you can make 100k per run with normal goods it isn't worth it any more.

I still pick up rare goods if I'm in the area though.

That's what I was thinking, I had a fantastic run around Sol - 20min realtime gave me 150k - and I thought I was doing alright, but then all these people going on about making millions per hour, I just can't understand how.

Unless you are rolling in a T9, I think there's a 1.5 mill/hour cap right now. I hit that easily with rares.

You don't need more than 100t cargo with 20 LY range to make this much btw. You could do it easily in an Asp. I do it in my clipper because I like flying it.

They don't spawn like they did in gamma though. You can usually only get 5-6 at once now.

You do big sweeps. I make 8 stops on my route, load up, jump ~160 Ly and drop the load.

I net ~90t, the whole thing takes about an hour or so.

You have to find the areas where there are several stations selling rares in cluster. The Lave area has this, 39 Tauri has this. They are a perfect distance from one another. Ive been using an ASP and making between 1.3 and 2 million per hour with this run depending on the spawn amount on any particular run.

If youre running a Type 7 or Type 9 then its not the way to go, youre better off just doing local bulk trades. I think the ASP is perfect for the rare runs, 30 ly jumps with a 5A FSD, docks fast, and has just the right amount of cargo space.

It also makes a nice farting sound when you boost.

Short answer is yes. Long answer is make a system circuit of rare station routes and sell as you reach the 150ly zenith on a route. Rinse and repeat and you can afford something past the Lakon 6 after many boring flights. Welcome to Space Trading Sim 2014 until they provide a more entertaining way to earn credits.

There was actually nothing wrong with the old rare trading model. Because of the wait to refresh goods, you would make pretty much the same amount as running a prog cell/gold route between neighbouring systems in the same time frame.

It was much more fun though; dodging interdictions over 160ly! Not sure why it got whined out of existence.

I think it is worth it if you are in a ship with less than 100t capacity, in a Cobra I could probably earn just over a million credits per hour with rares if I was really pushing it. Good for a different run as well, rather than just the to and fro of a regular trade route.

Just bought a Cobra for trying rare good trading (my Asp seemed to be sort of overkill for this job), but as I only did find two markets selling them so far and both systems are only 80 ly apart, I was not overwhelmed by the profits I made. I guess, I'll have to keep exploring for a little while until I did find more sellers.

(And no, I have no intention at all to use any forum list to "find" those opportunities. If I don't find them myself in-game, they do not exist. The game's content is sparse enough so far and there is no need to spoil myself the enjoyment of discovery. I'll try hard to forget the system names I've read in this thread. Anyone got a blue pill for me, please?)

It was allegedly quite easy until a recent change because you could sit in a rares market and get another lot every 10 minutes and when you had a full load in your big ship go off and make outrageous amounts of money. Now you pretty much have to sell before you get more. Caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth

I can say for myself that it is totally worth the effort if you have the right equipment and know what you are doing. It nets me about 1.5 mil for a loop and requires way less attention to various market tools. Here is what I do
1) Go to Lave area as it has 5 different system with rare commodities one close to another and visit all those systems. It is worth visiting some of them more than once just because the rare wares still respawn up to a certain limit and you can also find some transport missions for the same systems. When it is done, you should have half of your cargo filled with rare wares.
2) Use http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ to find nearest jumping spots and start visiting them until you have your cargo hold full. I usually have to visit 5 more systems to get my cargo hold full.
3) Find some system that is 160ly from where I am and go there to sell it all. I usually pick up a system that also sells rare wares so that I don't go empty on my way back
4) Sell it all and go to #1 ~1.5 mil richer

With Cobra you can probably skip #2 and get your 700-800k even faster. Long range FSD really helps here.

I love doing meandering trading runs in my Asp. It may not be the most efficient way to grind credits, but I have fun doing it, and I can intersperse it with pirate hunting and missions between the nodes, especially in the Lave-Leesti hub. They like me there, and being able to get the occasional 6-figure mission is gravy.

I think rares trading is tailored now for the Cobra sized cargo hold. Since from one cluster like Lave to another, you can't really get more than 30ish in total per spawn.
