Separate nav vs combat targets

I posted this in Dangerous Discussion where it was quickly buried, so resurrecting it here:

When you use the "target in front of you" option, it becomes your currently selected navigation target. (Next target options don't do this.) This is fine if you are selecting a planet or station where you intend to go, but if you are selecting a ship on the way, suddenly you have no nav target selected. This usually prevents me from inspecting other ships I see pass by on my way to a station, because if I select a ship, my marker to the station is gone.

I think it would be best to have a nav computer selection and a targeting computer selection. That way, I can set a destination, and still inspect or even explore/scan something on the way. Plus, while in combat, I can have my escape route ready to go if I need to bug out.

I second this request. We need to target ships around us to scan for dangers during travels. Simultaneously loosing our set destination makes little sense.

There are two cycle target controls, the one you guys aren't using resets to your nav target if there are no enemies about.

And if you have enemies about, then what? I think there's a good case for a "select navigation target" key binding, that consistently selects the thing that your nav computer is locked onto regardless of whatever else is around, without any modal "only works if" attached. Especially when targeting the thing in front of me preferentially selects FSD wakes over planets or stations.

At the moment, the only reliable way I can find to do that is going to my target panel, selecting my current nav target, then quickly unlocking and locking it again. Not ideal for something that should be a pretty standard function of getting around in space. (I usually end up doing this every few minutes, if I'm in a busy system and want to start scanning approaching ships for signs of hostile intent.)

There are no enemy targets in supercruise, and if your not in supercruise and there are enemies around you, why aren't you killing them. I'm not saying this keybind shouldn't be put in the game, I'm trying to help you find your nav target quicker.

I agree with OP!

Additionally please a button a) to switch in the panel between the nav-target and the 'combat' target or b) to unmark the secondary/combat target (to return to the nav-view)

You can actually lock a navigation target and use the "G" (by default) to cycle through ships without unlocking your navigation so that when your target ship gets untargeted, your navigation systems goes back to your navigation targets. the default "T" key locks whatever's in front of you. I don't remember every key bind but there's one to select objects and still not unlock your navigation target.

good idea. maybe more active targets and the ability to switch through them.
So you can keep an eye on some targets and dont lose the nav point.
