Lost Thrusters after surviving big fight.... So unfair ?

What part of "game" don't you understand?

What part of "game" do you not understand? You know, games since like forever, have had fail states. Otherwise they are not really games.

If you want a pastime where you cannot fail, then perhaps... knitting?

The OP got into a fight where they on an opponent who gave them trouble and they paid for it. Tragedy indeed! But all part of the game. If they had been more cautious they would not have lost shields and therefore not lost their thrusters. They took the fight to the wire, and paid for it.

I'm not one of those calling for the game to be harder or easier, more realistic, or whatever. But this mechanic seems absoloutely fine to me. And if they had packed an field repair unit they could have lived on.

Where it could be improved would be some sort of distress call facility which would send out a call for help. But i wouldn't want this to be an auto rescue either. Anyone would be able to pick up this call, so the game engine would do a roll of the dice to determine number and types of ships that hear the call. This could then cause any of the following (or perhaps multiple):

1) Pirate turns up and demands you drop cargo or he kills you. Even if you do, he still just robs you and leaves you to rot.
2) SA turn up and help you out.
3) Repair service turn up and offer to fix you for a price.
4) Random NPC turns up and offers to fix you in return for a bigger price.
5) Psychopath NPC turns up and blasts you for the lulz.
6) Player picks up the signal and comes over to laugh at you.

Well, maybe that could be worded a little better!

Thruster destruction in Premium Beta was an incredible experience!

You could still manoeuvre, just a tiny little bit... like emergency thrusters. You could accelerate, albeit very slowly indeed.

You could even jump to supercruise, and limp along at a tiny fraction of usual speed.

If you made the long Flight of Shame back to a dock (and there were only Coriolis at the time), trying to get a ship down in one piece was really hard. But it was doable.

For the life of me, I can't see why this was changed. The current "Ha ha!" Simpsons moment has nothing going for it at all, whereas the gameplay it replaced was terrific.

I tried to recover an Anaconda with 0% drives one time... didn't survive the trip to the station thanks to pop-up interdictions.

But I tried.

I'd try every single time, even if it took me two damn hours to limp home. Even if the docking exercise was 99% likely to end in piles of wreckage bouncing around a rotating space station. :)

Oh well. Maybe one day we'll have player-to-player recovery (and refuelling, and credit transfer, etc.). :)

Had a decent scrap and took a pounding but survived with 12% which was rather chuffed about then I discovered that in the final moment the thrusters where taken out and was dead in space !!!!1

For the love of god, I survived, OK bit battered but 12% is 12% more than 0% and I racked up a nice bounty but still lost as had to self destruct, pay out insurance and lost bounty.....Disheartening to say the least.

So does this mean every fight I take on, if the %^&^%& gets lucky and blasts my thrusters I might as well just hit the destruct ?

I love Elite, Im an 84'er, Alpha Backer and I don't like how some got hell of a head start with exploits that should have been sealed and accounts wiped but what the hell. Senseless deaths (Especially after a victory) are going to kill the game big time, and I emphasise "senseless" as against stupid move or taking on someone bigger deaths.

Between this and jammed in docking ports and losing everything due to bugs its beginning to hurt even the faithful !!!

This community is toxic beyond measure. Someone is having a problem with the game that reduces their enjoyment and all you can think of is to berate him for it? They should just close the forums down.

It's happened to me... I've had my thrusters shot out from under me... it's so sad... :( unbearable... terrible actually... but it's still a game.
I don't think the OP has specifically a problem with the game, per se... but rather the learning curve.. or adjustment to the game's mechanics.

He has a problem with this game because he doesn't have an advantage over the AI. He thinks that is unfair. I think that people are used to call of duty and they want elite to be like that. There are thousands of games babysitting you. This game is not and hopefully never will be.

Back to thrusters - I'm pretty sure the devs confirmed that you cannot repair thrusters with a Field maintenance unit. That does seem a bit strange.

CaptainKremmen's post sounds like a much better idea, you should be able to limp home, or if the thruster's are severely damaged, make basic repairs with a unit to get you back to a decent repair facility.

I like the way it is implemented right now even if it means that what the OP describes can happen.

I had something close to this happen to myself, but since I check from time to time my module damage I realized that my thrusters are low (10%) so I simply turned my ship and flew backwards to finish the fight. Otherwise I would have been lost in space as well I assume.
Yes the repairs were higher since I took more dmg through the reduced mobility but you gotta to what you gotta do to survive ;)

I however would like a computer voice + a symbol in the HUD telling me 'thruster damage critical' when it reaches 25% or so (for each module) so I don't have to check in the battle myself permanently.

You pay enough as it is by surviving a close fight in repairs etc and oh I wish every fight could be gauged instantly, yup Ill win that lets fight, nope lets run...wheres the fun if you decide "right you scratched my paintwork, now your gonna pay" ? and if you do then good your getting better at engagements, if not urm, LOL

Look there are loads of posts moaning about ships taking to long to jump, distances, colour etc...as said that's the mechanics and yes in a fight it is possible to both end up dead but jeez is it a game killer when you have fought WITH skill against an equal if not superior adversary only to be robbed of it at the very end or even be willing to enter into such "even" fights....I don't want ED on a plate, far from it..already think its tool easy and quick to get big ships etc, in a couple of months most reasonable players will be in top level stuff (and bored probably) but if I sail close to the wind, and take on a chance it would be nice to at least limp home to tell the missus rather than die in cold space alone watching your trophy drift past the cockpit :p

I really think they should bring the distress beacon back, maybe only reserve it for open play. That way a new player "search and rescue" profession could be born.

So what?

Happened to me with 30 % Hull strength and over 150 k uncollected bounty (Or more there were some in the Empire and I had no opportunity to collect).

Did I swear? Yes, of course

Did I care? Not much really.

Should this be changed? Of course not.

If you didn't like the hunting itself why doing it? For me the bounty is just the extra bonus. At least when going after the big targets (the one that are the most dangerous not the ones that have the largest bounty)

S... happens

Welcome to ED game mechanics ..... Not very well thought out.
Games should be fun and not punishing players for playing.
Would be cool if we had skill sets to repair this thing, or send out calls to other players to help out.
ED has none of this.
But thank you for testing the game :)

To me, ED is like a beautiful giant fish pond, with all the waterfalls, little fishy castles, LED lighting everything a fish lover could ever wish for.
Then they go and fill it with hydrochloric acid and can't figure out why the fish keep dissolving ......

If this concerns you then fit an auto-repair module.

Not sure how this is being punished. Do you want big flashy stars over canisters, saying "Scoop me now for 50 bonus credits!!"? Or shooting another ship could cause it to drop repair globes that you pick up to repair 10% hull?

Someone went into combat and had their thrusters knocked out, in the same way we players can knock out a sub-system of another player or NPC. The same rules apply to everyone, everywhere. What you are wanting is for players to have an advantage over others, i.e. you have a superhero complex that has been instilled in you from other games that need you to save the world/universe etc... This isn't that game.

Now there's an idea I like and could see a new branch of multi play.

Definitely, great idea.

Hey, do you guys remember that one game that wasn't ELITE where if your thrusters blew up you were SOL? Hahaha, yeah, thats right :D! I don't remember either because the idea is stupid and wrong. I forgot how much fun I was having that one time I was playing a game and I essentially did nothing wrong and was still punished. Oh man, this is so much fun. 10/10 will play again GOTY for sure said no one ever.

This will probably be changed. Taking a screenshot now so I can post it later and rub it in your faces.

Heres a list of games that are KIND OF like ELITE which had nothing nearly as stupid but were still A TON of fun and in some ways challenging!!!

Open-Ended With Trading
Earth and Beyond
Freelancer
Privateer
Space Flight
X Series

With Space Pewpew Combat
Freespace series
IWar series
Star Luster (Japanese release only but I had it, I dunno how)
Tie Fighter blahblah
XCOM Interceptor
Wing Commander series

Point: Something cheesy doesn't mean it's unique. It just means it's cheesy and pretty lame. It's like taking the star and shoving it through the hole (lol) in the little kid block things. Just because it might fit eventually doesn't meant it's really a good idea! But hey, if you wanna be tryhards, whatever.
