Owie... Always Connected?

Ok so I am a semi-truck driver and besides the expense of constant on internet there is the problem of poor reception issues.

The expense could add $200 a month to my phone bill mattering on bandwidth requirements (WoW did that).

In some regions there is no 4g, 3g or good connections so this is a worry. Some areas also have issues with scratchy connections where when parked at a truck stop you can be online until a truck moves in front of you. Which can be a big deal at some stops.

Then there is international costs... since I enter Canada periodically this can be a problem. I have restrained myself after a $400 bill from excess use in Canada.

So finding out the game I have waited for since playing Elite as a new game on the Commodore 64, pining, desiring, wanting.... that it is Internet Only... is very disturbing.

Is there any way to resolve this for people like me? I can prove my driver status with a video, I can go through hoops to prevent hack theft, but I need this to not cost me so much money per month to play!

Heck if I paid for the public wifi at the two biggest truck chains that is still $50 a month and limits my playing time to 1/3 of the time!

There is no offline mode. There was a couple hundred page thread of the agony of no offline mode. The DEVs stated that there was too much going on server side for solo offline to be viable.

There was a large thread when this was first announced. At one point David Braben said he had been able to use a tethered connection to play whilst riding a train and that the actual data transferred for Solo mode was very low. Patches would be a different issue ofc. You might want to contact support for a more definitive answer.

You can reduce the traffic significantly when you play Solo Online. The most traffic you would get is when youmeet other players.

You can see your normal usage with ctrl-shift-b ingame. So maybe that helps a bit to see what impact the traffic would had, and what to expect on longer periods of playtime.

I know its not ideal, and doesnt help with your problem. But atleast you see how much and get a feeling off how demanding it is.
