Newcomer / Intro Heat critical question .....

Not sure if I have a big problem or not .....

I'm pretty close to a star and not in super cruise. My heat is at 83% and has been for 10 minutes or so even though I'm at full throttle flying away from the sun.

When I engage my frame shift drive, heat critical indicators flare and the heat level gets to over 120% very quickly. Once the cabin starts smoking I shut down the frame shift drive(it's only at about 75% and going VERY slow).

Any idea how hot is "too" hot?

Suggestions on my best course of action at this point?

Hi Lodar!

When the heat is at 150% your ship starts taking damage.

For moving away from a sun it's best to first get some distance within supercruise before trying to do a hyperspace jump (normal flight would take too long).

When you are really close you may get an "escape vector" to align with when supercruise charging is done.

I hope that helps you to move forward.

Also, the other thing to do is manually turn off modules to reduce your heat output.

Right panel > modules. Click on things to turn them off.

All you actually need at minimum to jump away is your thrusters and Frameshift Drive. Turn everything else off, that'll cut your ship's heat output quite a long way. You could maybe keep your life support and sensors online if you're not brave enough to try without them.

As Troublepilot said, charge for super cruise not hyperspace, as SC charges faster.

Once clear of the star, drop out and turn everything back on.

I have been in a similar position and my heat went to about 250% when I jumped but my Eagle survived with very little damage.

The standard button binding does both supercruise and hyperspace, intelligently figuring out which it thinks you want; but you can configure buttons in the prefs that only do supercruise or hyperspace, useful sometimes.
