Sloooooooow internet speed (Need help please)

I started playing ED as a premium beta backer in July when I was in the UK. I am in New Zealand now and in a bit of a rural spot in the Coromandel.

Here's how it is. I've been downloading ED for 3 days straight, currently fluctuating between 2kbps / 15kbps on an ADSL connection. (My dialup modem I used to connect to BBS's was quicker which was 20 years ago!). When the population around here are working and at school, it runs slightly faster and might hit around 150kbps but it's the holidays now so that is just not going to happen. According to Vodafone NZ, this is apparently normal speeds for this area

It's frustrating stuff... Now, the flip to this is I'm in a very good 4G zone and can get 10mbps (Down) | 2mbps (Up) on my mobile connection but DATA is expensive. I have a tether / hotspot setup to my pc.
There is no such thing as 'all you can eat data' available like we have back in the UK.

Can anyone please tell me what kind of up / down kbps i'll be looking at to play both online or in solo mode. How many megs I might use when playing for an hour or two.
I've just spent around $240 NZD (£120 GBP) over the past 30days on mobile data so if it's gonna chew up data, im pretty stuffed! Just got an X52 which makes it even more frustrating if unable to play it.

Ok, sorry for the slightly mad rant, merry christmas to you all, just having a few withdrawals since i havn't played for a few months and looking forward to seeing the release build.

I feel for you. Slow internet is the worst thing. Ever.

Have you confirmed your ISP isn't throttling your connection based on some sort of primitive and misguided "fair use" policy? Have you enquirer if there is a more expensive DSL package that would give better bandwidth (still cheaper than your mobile costs)?
Have you shouted at anyone in their contact centre?

Could be worse. Could be TalkTalk in the uk.

I saw some other thread were a dude was baffled by the ammount of data he came up with on his bill while he was only playing Solo mode, others said Open would be less because less data need to be moved back and forth.

Lol trust me, nothing is worse than this! I'm actually with TalkTalk back in the UK and even though its borderlining crap, it's moving lightyears faster than this.

The whole area has around 4000 residents, where as back home there are 250,000 and is monoplosied by voadfoneNZ, (TV / Phone / broadband / mobile).

Severe lack of servers in their datacentres i'm suspecting.

Though I'm not sure how much data will be used in open play, I do know that solo requires very little internet connectivity. You should be fine with the ADSL connection.

I don't live in NZ, do you get Fibre optic there? Is it affordable? is it in your area? That would be the best way for a stable connection regardless of location.

No-one should live without a decent internet connection. You have my sympathy.

Unfortunately it's years away, the citys are connected though and a big government funded scheme is ongoing, just gonna be a long while before it arrives anywhere as remote as this.

Yeah, that's kinda my worry, i may send customer support an email and see if they can give me a rough estimate

As they use Amazon to host it is unlikely to be a lack of servers
.
The amount of incoming telephone lines to a location can severely hamper internet connections. I used to live in a small village in Dorset, less than 20 homes, internet was fine until 5pm then it was a case of go watch TV. The way I understood it was that 10 homes do not have 10 lines, they share the lines and the load is spread across the incoming lines e.g. the 10 houses might only have two lines to the exchange and therefor if all 10 use the internet those lines cannot cope. So basically the more rural you are the higher chance of slow internet. This was a few about 6 years ago but unless you are in a city/large town I wouldn't expect much difference.
.
I now live about 20 miles away from the village and get 70mb infinity

No, sorry, I don't mean ED's datacenters - I know they are great, I meant the ISP's datacenter / exchange in my area are unable to cope with the 4000 people.

Do you get 3/4G coverage with 2Degrees in your neck of the words? Last time I was in NZ I'm sure a USB modem with reasonably priced. The 3GB data needed for the download would be about $20-30. That was a year ago so things may have changed.

I just did a jump between Henry's Vision and McDermott Enterprise. From launching the game, viewing the bulletin board, viewing the Galaxy Map, plotting a route, launching my vessel, entering Hyperspace [used about 350-400kB], then flying to McDermott, scanning a few ships in SC, disengaging the FSD, requesting docking permission, landing, checking the bulletin board and the commodities market and finally, saving and exiting....

All-in-all - The game used about 2.8MB down and 3.0MB up [6-7MB total, I'm factoring in a little extra for other programs pinging off in the background]. That was in about 5 minutes. Therefore, using 3MB up or down in 5-10 minutes, you'd need 10-20kBps up & down [simultaneously]. Therefore, you'd need 20-40kBps in total, in order to play this game in Open Play, at it's most basic level.

It's really sad to say.. But your internet connection isn't actually good enough at peak times! Part of me kinda wants to laugh, but that's just bad manners, and it's not really your fault the Internet is shockingly awful in your area.

You have my sympathies & I hope you can get it sorted soon!

NB - Should just mention the maths - Through just doing my single test [and that was in a low CMDR population area, only seen two]. You're looking at using somewhere around the 70MB/hr mark for this game... You better not use 3G/4G.

EDIT:
I think I already know the answer, but when you say '2kbps' and '15kbps', do you mean kilo-bits or kilo-Bytes? I'm pretty sure you mean Bytes, but if it's 'bits'... Then.. You really do need to move house. Really, you'd be faster shipping a sheep back to the Amazon servers with your 1s and 0s painted on it!

OP should be ok at 15KB/s requirements for network is actually really really low, for example just flying round it's using around 20-50B/s, yes Bytes!!

BUT I think you'll be limited to solo mode, when you're on open play and another player (or two) pops in then network requirements shoot up.

Yep, I heard of this company, I'm going to have a look at their site and see how much they are charging for data. Got the game finally downloaded last night so will only need it for usage now!

Thanks for the great info, it doesn't sound too bad actually 70mb per hour is actually not bad at all and wont cost the earth! :)

Thanks guys, well, I am going to get it all setup with the new X52 later this evening and run it off the mobile. I'll get back with how much it costs for a couple of hours play session, that way at least it might be of some use for anyone else in a similar position.

Cheers Commanders!

Yes, you heard me right.. '2kbps' and '15kbps' (0.02mbs - 0.15mbps)
Luckily I didn't come over here for the internet! As bad as the internet is, this beutiful place does make up for it in many other ways.
