How to lose your ship

As Elite has so little info on this it needs stating before you go and make the same mistakes, especially if you get so far on and have a much bigger ship!

1. Run out of fuel by going to a system that either has no planets or no stations (no population) and going too far to return.
2. Accidentally shoot OR bump at an unwanted ship (inc. Police) and then think you can dock after getting permission at nearest station.
3. Crashing at speed into another ship.
4. Not affording the insurance for same shp (how are you to know how much this will be before buying? You don't).
5. Flying into the Sun after graphics crash when hyperspacing.
6. Upgrading your FSD engine to a lighter faster one but is not compatible yet displays you have suffient power for it - then find out when it gives too smal a Jump Range you can NOT put the old drive back in!!! (BUG) ticket raised
7. Install energy demanding hardware on your ship, exceeding your maximum power plant output, without power managing your systems in the right ui tab, and deploy hardpoints in a fight.
8. Get a fine and not pay it off within 24 hours real time at the dock that fined you then either try docking their again or try launching if you had already docked and went to bed due to having work next day! The station will prompty destroy you without warning as you are now Wanted (look in your right side system panel before launch/docking and have enough fuel to jump)
9. Change ship and put old one in storage can sometimes not appear there until logging back in but may also not have its upgrades! (BUG)
Please add more...

Yes Deggial, at least that one needs a confirmation command and can't be accidentally chosen. Some beginners didn't know about this so a valid point!
Will, that's been said in 3. but thanks.

With totally no experience how are we to know the limits of the game until it's too late? Even shields are there for a reason but...

But does it tell you this when looking to buy else how could we judge affordability based on a possible loss?

Another way of loosing your ship:

Install energy demanding hardware on your ship, exceeding your maximum power plant output,
without power managing your systems in the right ui tab, and deploy hardpoints in a fight.

Yep I did that and got no life support so returned to dock (but not lost ship luckily for me)
The "Rating Class / Class" menus are confusing at first. It is not clear which to read as same ship Class due to having it look like 3 menus not 2.

No you get Sidewinder as you begun with all equipment noted as loaned. There is no bank to get a loan either.
The trap is that this may have happened to you at a Station/Outpost that has no Shipyard, so even if you could afford say a Cobra/Viper, you won't be able to buy one! I had to blow my Cobra up twice because of the bug mentioned! It would not default back to the original working FSD even on the insurance and upgrades were NOT listed to chose besides stock!!!

When looking at buying a new ship it does NOT say how much the insurance will cost. This is a major flaw in dession making and one that the elitist here scoff at. If you had no clue what your 1st ship is even you can not plan any savings before upgrades.

1. Before every jump, check your fuel.
1a. If you have a fuel scoop, and the star you are CURRENTLY closest to is scoopable, if travelling to the next system will usse more than half of the fuel in your tank, see 1b.
1b. Check the system you are jumping to by clicking on the galaxy map. Make sure the correct system is selected. Look at the info screen (on the left). Scoopable star types are FMBKAG (and maybe O, but I havent's tested that).
1c. If you don't have a fuel scoop, fill up at every station you visit..

Its called math.

you can even use a calculator and no one will make fun of you.

There is a loan, up to 200k, (found out the hard way) also it's in the manual, worth a read or as the wise old saying goes RTFM ;)

Yep to previous poster, a loan exists up to 200K - and you can subtract modules in the screen to bring your ship insurance price under 200K if it exceeds it (of course for some of the ships where the hull alone would exceed the loan... just be sure you have the cash on hand!)

Yup, if you make sure you have more money in your account then the insurance cost (One is right over the other in statues screen) you are completely safe. Worse case you die and insurance gets you down to zero, you can get a smaller ship and if no shipyard... Just be careful ;)

Caveat on loans: Asps and larger chassis cost more even completely empty than the maximum loan amount. If you do not have at least 330k between loans and funds, minus any fines or bounties you accrue dying, you will lose your Asp. Scale this up for the larger chassis accordingly. That's the absolute minimum to keep your ride at all, not including modules or cargo money. Be very careful when upgrading.
