what's to stop you from...

I was telling a fried about ED and he asked me "what's to stop you quitting the game if you are in a fight and about to die?"

Valid question. Just log off for a few minutes to let the other ship leave the area then log back on. Can you quit if you are in a battle? If so do you get penalised?

Curious of deep space.

While an acedminc question with an answer, the real answer is: If that is your intention, why are you playing in open play instead of solo?

When you are in fight there is a 15 second delay. And you don't need to wait. Just return in solo mode for a few minutes.

I thought the time had been extended to 30 secs will try and test later.

Tested the "disconnect internet" in Beta/Gamma and i could still hear the hits coming in :p

Whoa there, Tonto. He didn't say it was his intention. He asked the question. It's quite valid to ask.

Really? Wow, that seems like a long time, especially if you're accidentally disconnected.

Actually never tested that. It's the figure i see around the boards. I think there was no delay whatsoever before they introduced the 15 seconds.

If the server disconnects you then the roll back puts you either before the fight or after for both parties, if you disconnect from the server .............

Edited previous post after the above quote sorry

While killtask works wonders in this situation and I have it hotkeyed just in case, the best way for PvP would be actually stop peer to peer traffic through firewall. The beauty here is that servers won't have any way to tell who actually did disconnect :)

If it happened a lot to you somebody might notice though, and you might get banned from open play. Cheating is generally not really liked in games...

The 15 second timer for logging out while "in danger" was added in Beta 2.0, I think. I don't recall seeing a patch note that extended it, but they can always adjust this server-side.

The DDA on this has some discussion about various ways to handle a hard disconnect (pulling the plug), including having your ship float in space for X number of seconds, but I don't think that's been implemented (yet). FD may be keeping an eye on this to see how big a problem it is, because some people do have intermittent drop-outs. They may be looking at traffic analysis to differentiate between "soft" ISP interruptions vs. hard disconnects that may be intentional. I dunno, just guessing here.

As the head of a software dev company whos been asked to implement something similiar, i can tell you its pretty much impossible to differentiate the difference.

The problem is a cutoff looks very similar (on a server, looking towards a client) if the network suddenly goes bang OR its been deliberately pulled (in fact it can look the same at packet level) So you have to introduce intelligence logic (ie whats the PROBABILITY its been done on purpose) which is why you have solutions such as the 15/30 second rule to account for accident and purposeful

In this case I will 1) trigger the firewall 2) report the other player for doing this because they have no way of telling who actually triggered that :)

They may notice it suspiciously always happens to you.

It's fairly simple. If you don't want to interact with other humans at a particular stage of the game, play solo. Don't waste everybody else's time being a target if you're going to cheat.

Agreed, also Another good example of intelligence logic. Previous occurances etc.

Now I like this logic, somehow I'm wasting some one else's time by being their target? :) There is no insentive right now to play open except getting landing pads clogged and some horrible stuttering in FSD, but if such incentive appears in the game I'd certainly be doing this and much more. My favorite past time is to mess with PvPers in online games if it gives me a slightest bit of the edge.

I suspect the combination of this attitude and the inability to spell 'pastime' is not a coincidence.

Let's see:
- See other players
- Talk with other players
- Shoot player pirates
- Shoot player civilians
- Steal players trying to claim a bounty by killing the target first
etc.

That's just a little i can think of as "insentive" to play on open.

But going back to the original talk, there's timers, but they are too little and should be extended, there's also still 1 exploit that allows players to disconnect asap, which i'm not going to name it here (FD already has the tickets).
We can expect more gameplay changes soon to prevent "cheaters" and exploiters from abusing getting out of combat during open, but it's Christmas time, let's give them a well deserved rest for now.

Like, killtask for Elite Dangerous on hotkey? :) And it sounds like I need to get back to messing with my firewall rules.
I also see that you rightfully put the word insentive in quotes.
