The strange sounds of Elite: Dangerous Cockpits

Hi to all you Elite Commanders,

Have you ever disabled the awesome music within ED and just listened to your ship's interior while in free space?
I was just doing that to see if stars in ED "sing" (and they do) and while I was sitting in my Hauler, gettin ready for some space music, I discovered some real disturbing and weird sounds within my ship.

Actually, it sounds like a pack of Predators listening to some dubstep or rave (or short: RavePreds), or some other strange creatures doing some chaos in my cargo hold.
I recorded a Video to show off what I mean. I never saw a Post or even a YT video which actually talks about the "interior sound design" of your spacecraft.

To hear it, you sadly have to turn up the volume. Best is to actually do that after the ship comes to a full stop, otherwise your ears might start to bleed ;)

I checked that up with my brother as well who is flying a Cobra and he told me the Cobra interiors sound freaky as sh*t since it seems it has an own torture chamber built in. If you listen closely, you can hear sounds like if someone is actually crying within the ship, paird with some strange, deep mechanical work sounds and some creaking.

Would love to see if some Commanders here can record the sounds of their current ship, since we dont have that much time playing this game to collect alot of money and check out all ships. It would be great to get an insight what other ships sound like :)

Here is the Video:

I noticed this too with my Sennheiser Momentum headphones last week. It's definitely an unsettling noise. I thought it might be the ship receiving some unknown alien's communication signals of distress.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I heard it in my Viper.

Well all the ships have there own unique sounds, my favorite is the groaning sound the ships make when pushed hard. The Cobra is my favorite sounding ship. My Clipper sounds sweet, but the Cobra sounds like a beast when decelerating. Awesome feeling with a BK gamer attached to your seat.

I love those little sounds. Even in my high end sound rig they're very quiet.

I've always figured they were the sounds of the ship's systems working, the hum of the aircon and the sensors picking up random EM radiation.

I think they add some real character and maybe FD should make them more noticeable when thrusters are off.

Indeed. What I found funny was the sound when you go from full thrust to full stop with the Hauler. It sounds like a funny all-weird techno voice doing some beatboxing :)

But initially I was talking about the "ambient interior sounds" when the ship is at full stop. Once heard, it cannot be unheard. And it freaks me out all the time now when playing. I am always afraid some scary, crawling alien spiders might show up behind my pilots seat *shudders*

I love the sound engineering in ED. Fools me every time... I keep thinking it's my neighbor dealing with the cockroaches in her walk-in closet. :D

I generally love the sound overall but there's one that just annoys the crap out of me - the rattle that you hear when you boost.

Rattle noises in cars just screams CHEAP and not solidly built. I can understand it in the beginner ships but when you start getting to a Cobra and upwards there shouldn't be any rattle noise IMO.

I think that what rattles is the cargo canisters... now I'll need to pay attention while running empty and see if that annoying rattle is still there.

The ASP have some kinda weird high pitched metalic sounds.. Besides the radar that sounds like a beating heart, whenever it pulses. or something like that.
Had to disable the thrusters to hear it better, as they were constantly making sound.

I found Hauler sounds a bit disturbing, like from some horor movie... So I sold it fast, and get my precious Cobra. ;)

But they really should do something with Hauler exiting from Frame Shift.

Hauler does have some weird sounds, I've only flown one for a couple of nights, used it for mining, sometimes when using the manuevering thrusters at low speeds it sounds like a slowed down voice.

The boost sound on the eagle pretty awesome, sounds like the screams of a thousand lost souls

Glad I am not the only one who finds that "tick tick tick" at the end of the boost annoying. I have always assumed it is supposed to reflect the easing up of stress on the ship but it sounds wrong to me (more like somebody tapping a metal pen on a window).

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by the stars 'sing'?

Stars and Planets emit electromagnetic vibrations. A good example with explanation is this YT Video:

Such ambient "singing" sounds are actually implemented in ED.

This was a surprise to me too - I cranked up the volume for a good frag session and was amazed to hear all sorts of crap, like the noises the UI makes when it's open. There was a whole load of stuff going on that I hadn't noticed before.

I bought the Adder some days ago and encountered the eerie noises (in particular the deceleration sounds). I thought i would get used to them but in the end it were the engine sounds which made me exchange my Adder through a Viper (which sounds for me far better). Next step Cobra...
