X52: A warning.

My wife (or Santa) got me a x52 pro for Xmas.

I didn't have a chance to play on the day, and Boxing day's been hectic. We had friends over this evening for drinks, and more drinks. I HAD plugged the system into my pc so it lit up the room it was in and when enquired I said it was my Christmas present and if pushed I told them it was for ED.

Most of our guests were about my age and about half of them remember Elite (I think there's at least one logging on right now to buy it) and wanted to have a look, I offered them the controls and he said demurely that he didn't want to look an idiot and crash my ship (very considerate).

Now here's the warning, the x52 pro has a damn sight more buttons than the FLY5, and thusly is configured completely different.

DO NOT PLUG IN YOUR X52 AND FLY OUT OF A STATION IF YOU'VE NEVER USED IT BEFORE, HAVE HAD A DRINK AND ARE TTRYING TO IMPRESS FRIENDS.

It is a marvellous bit of kit but I need to spend at least an hour configuring it so I know what the bleeding hell is going on and I'm not stabbing wildly at buttons just to get my view centered again let alone fly straight.

Luckily most of my friends were too busy caught up in the moment, watching the graphics, or remembering the original and were planning on how to raise the cash for a new game to realise what a spod I was being staring at the contacts panel while flying in circles.

I very much look forward to being able to spend some time lovingly caressing the throttle while assigning my keys.

Merry Christmas

Good advice. Took me a few days to figure out where everything was on mine, then a few more tonchange it what I wanted and get it working right. I'd strongly recommend printing out a keymap diagram and keeping it handy till it starts to be automatic. I'm at work right now, but when I get home I can send you mine that you can edit in ms word if you can't find one you like. :)

Oh god, yes please.

That throttle is damn comfortable isn't it. ;) Welcome to the x52 crew.

Mmmm, yes it is. Even when ED isn't running it's a bit of a comforter.

I just got the fly 5 i have not used a flight stick for game's since elite 2 any tips on a good setup/how to use fly 5 finding it very stiff and hard to use took damn near 35 mins to kill the sidewinder in training mission.

Just got my X52 Pro.
Tutorials are the way to go. Destroying those floating Toxic waste canisters was very helpful indeed :)

bad decisions can be made while fling under the influence...

also i'm planning on getting the x52, instead of using the Xbox controller i have now, is it worth it?

Way to go Commander.

If you need/want any help setting it up there's plenty of folks on here willing to jump in and help, including me (I fly a vanilla X52, not a pro, bought mine before the pro was out)

It's a very capable stick, have fun.

That's a great tip!

A friend of mine is selling me his old X52 after the Holidays. And, here I was planning on just taking it out straight... heh :D

bahahaha gave me a laugh! I love my pro, But it has it's design flaws I admitt, however. It grows on you, at first I was overwhelmed but I now have tamed the beast of a HOTAS this is.

On my FLY5 I used the witch's hat as the lateral thrust control, button 11 as boost, 6,7,8 and 9 as the power distributors, and 2,3,4 and 5 as secondary fire/target ahead/next target and headlook unlock. And you're right about stiffness, didn't really notice until I tried the x52.
