Hunting bounty with a friend

Is it just me or is it really difficult to go hunting bounties with friend right now?
Specifically I am talking about how hard it is to follow friend's low energy FSD wake.
Or is there some trick I do not know?

it is a mess.

tried it yesterday extensively with a friend. the problems we encountered.
- no wake visible at all
- on entering the wake it's empty and my buddy nowhere to be seen
- i enter the wake, see my buddy, can't see the ship he's shooting
- wake says "not scanned", although i scanned him
- the whole approach mechanic a big pita (the controls appparently aren't made for those slight adjustments at very high speed)
- coop-missions not existing, we both could take the same assassination mission, great, but only one guy gets the last hit, and the "mission complete"

it's great when it works, but it's frustration half of the time.
i'm very much looking forward to the wings-features and i hope it solves all this crap.

in the end the best coop-experience are probably extraction sites, but it would be sad if coop is limited to that.

I've been thinking about this and how it would work. It's not easy, but does work within the existing game mechanic and requires much more work from the Cmdrs.

Assuming you start from the same station in normal space you would both select a destination (in system or out) and synchronise your jump.

Once in frame shift the Cmdrs should be able to find each other using the contacts tab. (Not sure if you would need to scan each other first?)

If you're hunting bounty or plan on jumping out on an unidentified signal source
Cmdr A lines up on the signal source and prepares to drop out / interdict.
Cmdr B targets and lines up on Cmdr A.
Cmdr A drops out / interdicts
Cmdr B now targets the FSD signature that has replaced their Cmdr A contact signal.
Cmdr B approaches and drops out at the Cmdr A FSD signal.
Cmdr A and Cmdr B are at the same point in normal space.

I'm guessing they will have to share kills in a gentlemanly manner.

Has anyone tried this? It's just theory right now.

yes, ofc that's basically how it works and what those wakes are made for :)
tho you don't need the jump-syncing

but following your friend close enough so you don't need 5minutes to enter his wake is the first problem, because the controls are way too sensible at that scale
also sometimes you will just not find your buddy in space, although we are in a group, apparently the matchmaking isn't 100% reliable (maybe a good 95%)

We've tried wake sharing and it's too buggy right now. We're happy hunting at nav beacons and will soon head to a conflict zone.

Once wings are introduced, life should get a lot better.

Things I think would fix this:

Label USS and Mining Sites by numbers...

Extraction Site #1, Extraction Site #2 etc etc etc

Friends markers/friends counters so in deep space you can see eachother and label wake clouds by players name... "CMDR MuzzUK's Wake Cloud"

I'm sure FD will improve multiplayer otherwise I will end up getting bored, I love the original Elite and Frontier games but I came here 50% for the stuff to do with friends.

Jumping together into fixed pre-fixed locations (USS, Extraction Sites, Nav-Beacons) works fine with a friend. However, when following his wake upon him having interdicted a ship, I can see my friend but not the imaginary ship he is firing at. Wrote a ticket.

I've done some assassination missions with an other player, about 6.

First problem is the low energy wakes (the white things) dont have any mass, unlike USS, so you don't slow down as you approach. If you are in teh middle of nowhere this can make it impossible for someone to join you.

The low energy wakes dont spawn for new people to a system, so if you go in a USS and tell your friend 1 system over to come help, they cant. When they arrive at your system there is nothing for them to go to.

Once you do arrive in the "normal space" you can hit a problem if you took a while getting there. Your sensors can only see 5km, the ships in the USS might have moved while you are getting there so you see noone.

Same goes for someone getting interdicted, unless you are right next to them its hard to help, and if its a player the combat is usually over quickly.

I've ended up dropping 8 palladium if it was my mission that got help, no other way to give money.

The co-op patch had best be well under way because this game is not co-op MP in any practical sense. It is one of the greatest letdowns about this release.

** I took my POST down that I posted the other day in support of this thread.**

We have tried this many times and have yet to be able to support each other in battle. I am in the States and he is in the UK, so I am not sure if this a server Sync issue. Below is a description of the events and also a video that captures the issue first hand.

Scenario:

  • Ship #1 & Ship #2 in super cruise together playing coop.
  • Ship #1 Sees a target and initiates Interdiction.
  • Ship #2 stays close waiting the the interdiction so they can drop into the low Energy wake.
  • Ship #1 sucessfully interdicts enemy and both fall out of super cruise.
  • Ship #2 locks onto the wake and gets close enough for "SAFE DISENGAGE READY" message.
  • Ship #2 drops out of super cruise and only sees Ship #1.

The above described scenario was video captured and can be viewed below:

I fell in love with Elite Dangerous on paper for its coop multiplayer design intent but I have yet to see it work as intended.

Please comment on your experiences, can you drop into a buddy's wake and help him? Is this issue something unique to just us two?

Thanks all for comments. I think there is a lot of issues with elite right now and this is just the minor one. Lets hope the discussed wing patch will make this game a better coop experience.

Go bounty hunting in resource extraction sites instead, that's the easiest and most reliable way to fly with friends. (Because once you can see each other, you can stay there for quite some time)

As for sharing bounties, simple communication: ie. "Next kill is yours".
