Hardware & Technical Who is holding out for the Rift Consumer edition?

I have been toying with the idea of buying a Samsung 4K monitor (I have a new R9 280X coming so have considered running Elite at 4k on the new screen).

However, for the £400 the screen will cost I think I would rather view the game on the Rift Consumer. I already play the game on a 32" 1080p TV :D

... X52 Pro is also being delivered soon. I think it will take a lot of practice to remember where all the buttons are on the joystick before I can get into the rift.

Who else is holding off for the Consumer Rift?

O/T question: Games like SC + Elite seem to have rejuvenated the Joystick market, I expect it will considerably help the Rift chaps too! My local shops don't even stock joysticks any more, they have fallen from fashion. Now trying to buy one online is like trying to find Slaves in Ngaliba :D

When I started reading about ELite and watching videos, I knew I wanted a HOTAS setup, and bought a Saitek X52 Pro before I even got the Beta :)

I also figured on getting OR, but yeah - consumer release for me. Assuming I can afford it. Looks like I'll need a video card upgrade too (using 670 GTX now) so this game is costing me a lot of money! ;)

I think that would struggle to 4k or rift. You'll need a very expensive GPU to pull either off and I'm not sure the rift is worth it, or even 4k to be honest.

I would go for the Oculus Rift over 4k.

I currently have a DK2 - I can honestly tell you if you offered me a large 4k Monitor right now in exchange for my low res DK2 I would say no. Once you have experienced the Rift you can't go back to playing this game on a monitor. I can't anyway.

For certain the retail Oculus until then 3xmonitor gaming. 4K will come later for me when they come down a bit more. I use the joystick I had when ED started kickstarter, a Logitech 3D Extreme w/Voice Attack (helps free up some buttons I don't have like a X52 setup).

+1 for me as OR is a whole new way of playing.

I personally dont understand the appeal of the rift so early in its development.. The low res simply sucks and although its cplteley immersive, the quality of the visuals is just not there yet.

That, and it makes using a hotas tricky.

I'd far sooner grab a new 34" curved wide screen led and use that.. No point in a smaller 28" 4k at all IMO.

As long as you have the hardware to get it running smoothly, there's nothing like it.

most deff the rift, once you have played using the rift, using a 2d monitor is just plan crap! It is a whole different game

I can't say I am holding out.. having the DK2 already, but I will certainly be purchasing the consumer version the second it becomes available. The rift is something you have to see to believe just how good it really is, even now with its lower resolutions and screen door effect.

Same here...

Not hard to use a HOTAS at all... I have most of teh switches on my x55 programmed and I have no problem using it without looking at it.

To be honest I would buy the DK2 now, the reason I don't is that I would need changing my graphics card, and I fear once the retail rift comes out I'd have to change my GPU again if it's not optimized properly...

What graphics card will we need to run the new Rift in 1080p? for me this is the base line resolution as I think below that and the text is hard to read.

I will have an R9 280X (I can run two in crossfire if required), so that will be 6GB GDDR5. More than enough I think to chew the 1080p x2 for the OR requirements and 4k

The important thing about these cards is

GPU 1100/Boost:1150 MHz Core Clock
28 nm Chip
2048 x Stream Processors
Video Memory 3072 MB Size
384 -bit GDDR5
6400 MHz Effective

The 384bit bus makes a huge different to the fill rate.
DX12 support, Mantle API (does Elite support this yet, last I checked it said pending?)

I'm waiting for commercial release of the occulus rift, but know nothing about it! When, how much and what you need hardware wise!

Definately holding out for the rift.

I won't go for a dev kit, since the resolution is so low. I agree that it's an amazing experience even with the low res, but I also like my temporary 5760x1200 while I wait for the rift.

I'm sooo tempted to get the DK2 but will hold out for the CV.

What GFX card would be a minimum requirement? I will prob get a GTX 970 if that is sufficient (currently using a GTX 660).

They say its months away from release. Sometime in 2015. So yeah, looking forward to purchasing it on day one. Right now i'm fine with a 27inch and trackir.

According to peeps over at SC forum it is expected you will need 90 fps @ 1080p (x2) which will be impossible to achieve with a single mid range card at high/max quality. I think 2x R9 280X will be fine, although that is using 660watts including CPU during gaming, which could make it expensive to play in the long run ! (60 hours a month is ~£6/7 a month excluding monitor etc, so probably not that bad ;) )

Don't think the x52 looks comfortable to use at all, so i gave it a miss. I prefer slouching with the 360 controller. I decided to save up my pennies for the release of oculus rift as I think that'll really enhance ED for me! I just wish they would set a date already.
