USS missions

I have a USS empire rank progression mission to kill pirates in an unoccupied system but nothing is showing up. If I dump the mission will I get another progression mission?

I feel your pain. I did two of these. Just cruise around at minimum speed until a USS appears. They do come eventually. Unfortunately, 3/4 of them are a trader bumbling around. Make sure you have no fetch missions or they will all give you alternate deliveries before you ever see a pirate.

I would try and do it if you can, failing demotes you IIRC. In future, check system before accepting and avoid uninhabited systems.

Edit, anyone else think it odd that the game unfailingly spawns in "Get me cargo instead" NPCs at USS (stupid! I could do both!), yet fails to generate extra pirates in a system you gave been specifically tasked to hunt pirates in?

Yes, I just dumped a Federal mission and instantly got another one at the next port. I abandoned mine without being fined.

You could also look for an unoccupied system that has an asteroid belt. You almost always have NPC pirates trying to interdict you in those.

One thing I think that's important is to have cargo when you do the pirate kill missions. The pirates are typically 'clean', and if you have no cargo they'll just scan you and do the old "bah no goodies for me" routine. If you have cargo, they'll scan, you ignore, they attack, you kill them.

The mistake I made with these missions at first was (a) not taking cargo, and (b) attacking wanted traders. Like I said, pirates are invariably clean.

This is ridiculous. I managed to get another progression missions and yep. it was another pirate killing USS mission. PLEASE DEVS....stop making us do stuff that is nit fun!

And i eventually kill enough pirates after millions of useless uss and guess what....I dont gain rank....... devs stop this crap. Ban me if you want but stop making the game less fun than it could be.

Are you sure they were pirates?

i.e. they were clean, they demanded your cargo, and then they attacked you when you refused?
