Turns out a 35ly Jump is useless! Need 200ly+

Yep, 35ly is not going to cut it if you want to explore.

Also need a way of measuring the distance between systems, you know, without flying all the way out there to discover that your puny 35ly drive is about as much use as wet toilet paper!

<sigh>

Think I'll head back home...

Plotting a course across the galaxy is pretty tricky. I have no idea how to make that better without the 200LY jump drive though, either.

There are many tales of the American west, while it was being settled, of explorers loosing their way or choosing the wrong mountain pass to try to get across the Rockies. I am certainly glad they did not have your attitude about exploration! ;)

I agree 100 percent that it would be a VERY handy tool to be able to select systems and determine distance.

Well there is absolutely no way I can get to a nebula I set out for, I come unstuck with a 65ly jump, but then when I followed the path from that system there was another gap, approx twice as big.... Nothing else around, nearly 1,000ly high on the 'near' edge of the galaxy... oh well, lesson learned.

Measuring tool please DEV :)

Yeah, stars become few and far between the further you go from the central regions of the galaxy.

I think we're going to need a new special ship for that kind of exploration work.

I hope that we see a path to access a milspec type drive. Perhaps with high grade fuels mentioned back in the design documents (onboard refinery in a slot?) that might get us those sort of ranges.

65ly is one hell of a long way though!

Aye a "select two systems and see distance between them" would be good. It is impossible to determine visually with any accuracy whether a jump is do-able or not.

Well, there is nothing in the rules of the universe that says "all planets should be explorable". Some are out of reach, well...they're out of reach. Maybe with new tech in the next millenium, kinda like everything out of our solar system is out of reach now, even by unmanned probes. I don't really see a problem with that.

> Also need a way of measuring the distance between systems

You already do, you can use the co-ordinates. An in-game calculator would help though.

New kind of exploration ship ? Or the possability to upgrade certain part of your ship and loose not needed space. As example my ASP. Put a Class 6 FSD on board but loose a part 3 compartment. Something like this.

Whats the jumprange of a fully upgraded FSD on board an Anaconda or Phyton ?

There is a system on the edge of the galaxy that's about 2300 LY away from anything else. It's all alone out there in the deep reaches of space. For that you can't really do anything and will likely never get someone to explore it.

Yes, and YOU BETTER STAY OFF MY LAWN, PUNKS! Shaka - Re is not for you.

Another way of looking at this might be a significant outfitting module, say a Hyperspace Navigation Sub-Destination Supercomputer. Allows jumps to starless void locations, then takes time to calculate the next jump etc. Therefore range would be limited by fuel tank capacity.

Would add a new dimension to outfitting for exploration.

Well at the moment, I can think of a few options.
Bigger Drive (Military?)
A Second Drive! (Don't need a massive hold for exploring!)
Worm Hole
Dare I say, Jump Gate?

Aha! Simple, fit this...

Perhaps there is a gap of 65 or 150 light years, that doesn't mean the nebula is inaccessible.

It may well just man you need to go a long way around. I went out to the next spiral arm in my cobra not too long ago. There were several points where I needed to go a circuitous route to avoid gaps that were too big for my 17.74LY jump range. I got there though.

what I would like to see is additional internal modules:

- jump distance extender
- frameshift accelerator (for faster accel/decel insystem)
- surface scan amplifier with weapon/utility mount surface scan focus antenna (to be able to scan from a bit farther away)
- surrounding system scanner (analyses all surrounding systems for no,few, many, atruckton planets/secondary stars)
- above plugged into galaxy map and route planner (to avoid visiting systems with nothing/few bodies and improve yield/profitability)

would go a long way of making exploration scale with gear and bigger ships with more internal slots. In conjunction of the level 2&3 surface scanners.
