Exploration - Explorers should have to carry provisions....

A thought occurred to me yesterday while playing - there are a lot of explorers going out beyond populated space. Where are the pliots getting their food and water from? I think there needs to be a mechanic for fuelling the pilot as well as the ship once you can no longer dock at a space station, water is likely to be more of a problem than food in itself. An amount of each to be consumed each day, with appropriate detrimental effects when not enough is consumed or it runs out, forcing a run back to populated space. The run back should be within a time before the ship takes over and ejects the pilot in an escape pod (going into hibernation I guess) and you wake up in your new ship in the nearest space station.......

eventually hull repairs and so forth can force u back. There a lot of space out there, but on the flip side, once the settled systems start expanding ( terraofrming) fringe factions beginning to colonize and expand, then planets and so forth will need supplies.

Aboard the ISS they recycle EVERYTHING except human excrement and resupply food.

Water is a non issue.

Also. Be advised that even the smallest ship is able to carry at least 1 TON, that's one TON of potential food+ water+ ...other human nessecities...

C'mon one ton is enough to live for more than a month.

Wow I was just thinking about this as well.

Completely agree. Explorers should need to fill up their cargo holds with food/water for the long trips. More cargo space = longer travel.

To keep the burden off of non-explorers, you might consider having every docking "fill you up" automatically.

I don't know about you but I am eating my own waste and not even waiting for it to be recycled first /hardcore

Realism is all well and good but some things do occasionally need to be sacrificed in the name of good old fashioned fun. I mean when we get to walk around the space stations are we going to get a pop up say launch request denied you did not go the the little boys/girls room first and are not in a fit state to fly a ship. :p

If you do insist on such a feature then it would seem sensible to add similar features to the other aspects of the game too. I mean combat is stressful and you burn through your personal energy reserves at an increased rate so you would need to eat/drink too. If a trader eats too much they may be too fat to get in their ships I mean how many fat truckers have you seen :)

Yeah, make the exploration more punishing than it is, why don't you. Exploration and profit balancing is kind of an art form right now, so I don't think it needs to be any harder.

The problem I mainly see with that is that it would have to take up cargo space and cargo only ships in units of 1 ton, therefore all you'd need is one unit and that would last you quite a while.
When I've been exploring I've always imagined a box of MRE's within easy reach

Since cargo space is measured in tons, 1t of animal meat should be enough for the duration of the whole game. :D
That doesn't sound like a very interesting mechanic.

I assumed I had a 3D food printer in my cockpit :D

This! Food cartridges for food printers are already in the game, and it isn't too far stretched to assume that the "wear and tear" costs also include emptying your space toilet and filling up your ship's galley.

how does a pilot go to the toilet when they are an empty husk with a camera mounted where the head should be, unable to leave their seat, clenching their fists and flexing their wrists eternally

As people have said: 1 ton of food will keep you going for a long, long, long time.

The average US person eats 1 ton of food per year. As already noted, the water can just be recycled.

Food and water is a moot point. In a ship the size of a house squirreling away 250 pounds of cheap rations and 50 gallon drum of water with a purifier is no issue, and the longest exploration round trip to date would have consumed 1/5 of that. I'm all about complexity in gameplay but this is unnecessary, as you wouldn't even have to manage it to any great degree.
