Has docking gotten easier once the game went lived?

I watched a lot of the beta videos and it seems like ships were much more fragile in beta. I'd see pilots easing down to the landing pad and just blow up for no apparent reason. When the game went live, I was scared to death doing my first few landings.

I actually spent most of the first day of release doing landings in the simulator. After about 25 sucessful landings, not pretty ones but I was able to walk away, I Started my illustrious carreer. After 2 wipes, I got it right... sort of.

ah if u saw video from earlier beta's then what you were seeing was the bug where the ship wouldnt "lock into position" when you got centered, causing the station rotation to rip apart your ship. was fixed quite a while ago. no more worries on that.

Not sure how fragile the ships used to be but I've made some pretty bad landing mistakes including slamming into the back of the station after boosting through the entrance while smuggling in a Cobra and it only seems to take away about half shields and no hull damage, obviously when these impacts happen I'm not going full speed but was going fast enough to make me cringe.

Landing is not easier (was it ever difficult). But ships are more durable now. It makes sense that ships shields take off some impact. Nothing to do with docking mechanics though. I know what you mean of course. In Betas when you land and scratch the floor of the landing pad at 5 m/s your ship is half dead after that. Its no longer the case.

Docking is significantly easier than it used to be. Not just because of the bug, but handling during docking has been changed drastically. The ship was much less responsive and it was a lot easier to overshoot and get tangled in the tower, slam down too hard and break things or get bushwhacked by one of the lunatic NPC's who were cracking open canisters of those experimental drugs and spraying them all over the cockpit.

I miss it. Docking used to feel like a small accomplishment every time. Now it's trivial after your first 30 minutes in the game.

I think if you crash into things while trying to land you should become " wanted" and blown to bits for everyone's safety!

It was always trivial after your first 30 minutes. Nothing at all has changed about docking itself. Ship shields are a bit more durable and that's it. The only time docking becomes slightly more challenging is with the large ships, like condas or T9.

Yeah, hasn't gotten easier, your experience and perception changes. It's called practice. You repeat anything enough and it becomes like second nature. How could docking ever possibly remain as challenging as when you first started out? Even if they made it so the slightest bump caused your ship to explode, you'd eventually get good enough that it would never be an issue unless you just did something stupid.

I have no problem docking at all, but I still remember how hard I found it when I started out. Regardless, I still find the experience enjoyable. I'm glad they have it the way it is because it adds to the whole immersiveness. It's part of everyday life as a space pilot. It should be a simple procedure to the experienced pilot, yet still require that you be in control and pay attention to what you are doing.

Na they dumb it down big time.

Explain exactly which mechanics involved in docking, specifically, that they changed.

They haven't. The mechanics for docking now are exactly the same as they were in beta, it's just that ships are much more durable with their shields now, although such a change should make next to zero difference for anyone with longer than an hour of playtime.

Absolutely they have gotten easier, it used to be the ship had to right in the center of the bullseye now anywhere in the inner circle will do, for large ships anywhere near the pad!

Collision damage got reduced by something like 90% sometime in beta.

You don't have to be right in the center of the pad and touch down slowly any more either. You can now drop like a brick and miss the target by miles and it still catches you. Docking a type-9 or Anaconda actually used to be quite tricky.

Making the shields protect you from bad landings has other repercussions on the game too.

It enables players to come tearing into dock resulting in collisions, we've had a few threads already with people with large ships getting unavoidably wiped out in this way at huge cost.

If the game treats you like a noob you will play like a noob, to the detriment of all. =/
