Being a successful Double Agent in Elite: Dangerous

So if you play your cards right, depending on your missions and also making sure you don't get caught, you can gain rank or friendly/ally rep with all factions/governments.

Quite an interesting life making sure you dodge feds/imperials when doing missions for either side. Adds a little more excitement to gameplay:D

Yep, I wanted to be a double agent where I tried to help to weaker side in order to keep the system in perpetual conflict but this practice ended after two runs when I was carrying a mission for one faction and accepted another mission for the other and got caught carrying contraband for both sides. My rep for both factions dropped so have moved away from there in the hope to do some exploration instead :)

Oh, thank you for pointing this out. I'm climbing through the ranks of the Federation and was wondering if something like this was possible. I'll have to be more paranoid than usual about checking my target's status, faction and whereabouts before pulling the trigger.

then theres the practice of just hating both powers and boosting yorue standing with small indepdant factions, i am a merc for the dukes of mikunn, our quest galactic domination :)

no problem fly safe

I just care about rep when it comes to employment oportunities, really, im just a profiteer mainly rolling on anarchy systems that are close together so i can kills anything with a bounty/cargo to sell at the local station.

Its fun not having to care about any authority and murder anything for profit or because they looked at you the wrong way.

True but when you become friendly with a faction, they will offer you more interesting and more profitable jobs so it can be useful to help one faction and avoid jobs that hurt them so once you find a pleasant part of the galaxy, pick a faction and help them for a week or two and see what happens.

I just did some federal missions up to the warrant officer rank... while flying an Imperial Clipper.
Not suspicious at all? :D

No rep or rank penalty anywhere for doing missions at opposite side (which I find a bit dissappointing). Still allied with the Empire, friendly with feds.

unless you get caught how would they know? i find that an interesting career choice option and decent game mechanic. i wouldnt expect the empire and feds to share files with each other

Just did it. That role is actually in the missions. Go kill some Traders, can't find any Wanted then get told the mission has changed for some credits to Abandon for inside reasons. I do what they say and take the bribe, look in my Contracts and the mission is now kill 4 Pirates instead, go kill 4 then get all bounties with no Wanted tag on me. Sweet.

I'm just a bit unsure if there's any game mechanics for getting caught.

Or is there some actual attack missions later on? You know, ones that would actually harm my reputation on the other side.
