Convince me to buy ED ... a challenge!

My hand has been hovering over the 'add to cart' for this game, but its not cheap, and I would like some reassurance that I will get my moneys worth!

I was in love with the original Elite, played on a 48k spectrum, even with its lenslok lovliness! Nostalgia is pulling my towards Lave, but... I need that final push.

I am concerned that beyond the forums there seems only little player interaction in game, something I have come to value when gaming. I don't want to have a full on clan/guild experience like WoW, I do want a reason to interact with other players, beyond....shooting at them. I would like to play a part in an 'in game' community, but I certainly don't want a second job! I would like to able to play with friends that I currently have (if I can convince them to play), or new friends I meet in game. Is there a method of doing this? are there any in game communities? is there a half decent social interface in game? Are there objectives that suit a multi-player environment? Whats player maturity like? I don't mind PvP, I don't like pointless trolling.

I am looking for something to play, for maybe 10~15 Hrs a week, minimum chunk of one hour, maximum chunk of... lets say... 8 ;)

Sell it too me!

"Not cheap"?

It's £35. Forever. That's like 3 months on Eve.

I think it's cheap.

But if you need convincing, perhaps you need to spend more time on youtube watching gameplay and stuff, and see if that helps you decide one way or another.

Its a lot like the original. Only on a much greater scale. PvP is pretty rare, so is bumping into other players. Its basically the original but occasionally you will pass other humans. Its still mostly a SP game.

MP will probably improve as time goes by.

Based on what you said, Id suggest holding off until the next functional release which will apparently have improved chat and player wings, this next release should drop sometime in jan.

Nope. Own your own decisions. :p

Yeah but.... I played Eve.... quite liked it in principle, of course.... I could try it for FREE. I subbed for a short while, but found the community hard to break into, felt like a newb. I've watched a few hours of you tube vids, some of what I see I like, what I don't see is much on the way of in game player co-operation or opposition.

Its not a great game for multiplayer as yet. You usually are lucky to meet one or two other real people in a game session at the moment. This may change later on when Frontier starts developing all of the game properly (its just a rather basic game at the moment even though its been released). Having said all that its by far the best space game you could buy, its great fun as it is, and its superb sequel to Elite/Frontier. But multiplayer is a bit meh. Personally I couldnt care a hoot about that because I dont like multiplayer games anyway and every one I have ever played has been a hectic rush fest of a mess that I got sick of in less than a few hours.

we are hoping the social tools / chat / email / coms will come very quick after the holidays.... its quite dead community wise in-game atm and doesnt feel 'alive' as other mmo's ive played have done.

What he said. Its a space sim, its a work in progress. There are tons of different youtubers posting videos that will show you pretty much exactly what the game is. Do your research and own it.

Im very happy with my purchase and have dumped way too many hours into it over the holiday from my wifes perspective, and havent dreaded returning to work after a vacation as much as I am dreading returning tomorrow in quite a while, but alas that is only my personal opinion.

Nope. If you aren't excited to buy it then don't bother. You say you loved the original and yet PvP seems to be a dealbreaker for you. Doesn't add up. So chances are you will be disappointed and just become another moaner - sorry, no offence meant - just sayin' as I see it.

Also - expensive? Hell No! For 40 quid, less than the cost of one night out, you get to play for years in the gorgeous universe that FD has built! Jeez man, where's your sense of relativity? There's no monthly charge like other MMO's - not that this is an MMO in the sense of WoW or Eve, but still, one cost is all you ever have to pay. Some extras later if you want to but if you've had enough by then you just don't bother. In my part of the world it is about $80. That's what it costs to take my GF out for the night for a nice meal and a few drinks. Or perhaps taking a family to the movies. How on earth can you consider that expensive?

Anyway, seems to me that you won't enjoy it because you will always be thinking about how terribly expensive it is and "where's my money's worth" and no fun will be had - so - don't buy it and then there will be no question about "is it worth it?".

on the other hand, the game is immense and definitely worth buying just to support its future dev. i cross other real players regularly and theres usually 1 or 2 on my radar. With more content been added regularly, hopefully alot better coms, email and system wide chat and just the mind boggling size of the galactic map.... Buy it. I very much doubt you will regret it.

Please don't think I haven't bothered to research the game, cos I have, I should have got involved in the Kick Starter, I watched some beta game-play footage on You Tube, I found this place: http://firstgreatexpedition.org/mybb/index.php when I googled 'Elite Dangerous Communities', looks like an epic single player game, but very linear. The last single player game I played was Skyrim, which at least had a varying environment to explore - great game though, but once I completed the questline, and I made everything I needed, never played it again.

Wait until Wings comes out early 2015 and see what the feedback is like. Most of the social and group play will be out with that.
Until then you could get the game and learn how to play it, prior to getting your friends in so you can teach them when Wings comes out.

Otherwise, from your description you seem an older gamer, much like myself.

If you need convincing to buy something so cheap and can't make your own mind up without some random strangers on a forum convincing you, I doubt you will enjoy the game.

Go watch some You tube vids and read the few reviews that are out for the game and decide then. You'll get as much from doing that as anyone on the forum will answer.

Honestly? I'm a big fan, but I'd recommend you wait 3 months and ask again here.

Based on the interaction you look like you want, its just not ready.

Hope to be able to say a big yes at +3/+6 months etc

The game is beautiful but as beautiful as it is, it is also very empty, there are not even pilots sitting in other ships… You look into a ship window and it is empty as are the stations. The only person you will see is you, forever glued to your pilot chair, occasionally wringing a wrist to regain circulation – the sum part of your player animation.

The other problem or joy depending on your mind set and if you have an obsessive-compulsive personality (as I do) is that to get the big ships and the nice upgrades you must grind, you must go to work and you must work those fingers to the bone .
After the Asp, the ships and their relevant upgrades and insurance skyrockets through the preverbal roof but they look nice and I am personally aiming for the Lakon 9 because it reminds me of the Nostromo.

Another thing to suggest is to visit the Facebook page of this game but fair warning, the player demographic and their general psychology is interesting as it is depressing. The community is not too friendly, the newbies when asking a question will very often be spammed with insults, and nothing will be done about it.

That knowledge should also give you an idea of what to expect when you venture into open play – in deep space are many who will kill you simply for the pleasure of knowing you did not enjoy it because in killing you, you also lose money and sometimes lots of it.

As a grinder, losing money because of another player is never fun.

In summary and though a generalisation (sorry) I have met some nice people in this game you would be best served by expecting players you meet to be unhelpful, rude and generally unfriendly enough to want to blow you to bits even if you have an empty hold.

I strongly suggest you stick to Solo play until you have grinded (sic) enough money to buy the ship you want and the upgrades you will need to adequately defend yourself from the many out there who will want to see you burn because the newer you are the more you will be attacked.

I have seen this twice already and I do not even go open play that often (as I like to grind credits without having to watch over my shoulder).

Heh, PvP is certainly not a deal breaker, some player interaction might be. I am surprised by the number of 'don't buy it' responses, cos it would seem...I have already been branded a potential moaner! I can afford the 40 quid, its still more than I have played for a game in a very long time, feels odd forking the money out up front these days, and I never play on consoles so avoid the costs there also. I honestly thought that not ONE reply would suggest I didn't buy the game. It seems that a few a very protective of the game they have purchased, and invested in, perhaps since the kick stater campaign, I didnt expect that either!
