Flying Solo is cheating?

Introduction:
Started off in my Sidewinder, Open Play, did a bit of trading, got myself a Hauler, did some more trading. Figured out that the trading system is severly bonkers when finding exports on Planet A were more expensive than the prices on Planet B where they were imported. Found myself an insystem animal meat trading route, neting me 500 credits per ton. Grinded it out untill I had enough for a Viper. Made sure I was all out off bubblegum and the game now really is on!

Got to a Nav Beacon and found myself mixed with some other commanders also looking for targets. Pity the wanted fool who jumps into this I thought. Sure enough, every time one poked it's nose in there it would be obliterated within seconds. I was happily pew-pewing away as well, but dealing such low amounts of damage made it quite impossible to get the kill shot. After an hour or so, without winning any bounty I made the mistake of shooting one of the other cmdrs who bobbed into my line of fire. Shortly after that the pirate we were chasing exploded, so I sent the feller a message: "Sorry about that".

You can guess what's coming next can't you? Me limping into an outpost, shot to hell by my newfound bounty hunting friends. Wanted status. Outpost is crawling with cmdrs all trying to get in. After 15 minutes, sod it, going into solo, docked, paid my fine and really lacked motivation to go into open play again.

I've been going solo bounty hunting for a week now. Money is slowly flowing in, upgrading the Viper as I go. Play is still challenging, I get creamed by the occasional Viper or Cobra. Once tried to take on an Anaconda Mission after reading here how this game is too easy and people are having Conda's for breakfast. My experience was rather different and laced with explicitives all starting with the letter F.

So, in short. In open play I was being frustrated by the kill shot mechanic and the wanted status after you accidently shoot someone. In solo I am having fun. But now I'm reading how this devilish gameplay of mine is cheating. I am having an easy route to millions while the non-wusses are grinding it out open play style. I have been playing from the 16th, and I have yet to experience what a million in the bank feels like.

Moral of the story. Not all who fly solo for bounty hunting and may pop back into open play when they go trading or exploring are trying to game the system. Some are just rubbish pilots like me, looking for a way to make a buck or two :)

And how is using this ingame mechanic more of a cheat than using 3rd party trading tools? I'm not using those because it breaks the immersion for me, and I don't begrudge those who do. Play the game whatever way you like, as long as you're having fun.

Fly safe or die trying!

I prefer open play, but I find not being able to grab high-res screenshots an issue (my personal ED aim is to grab some nice shots every day I play). Solo play allows for high-res screenshots and it's really tempting me. But I'm still in open play and have been since before the launch.

Other than that, cheating is defined as changing your game state without using valid game operators. Switching from open play to solo and vice versa is a perfectly valid game operator and FD have purposefully made it this way. So: not cheating.

Flying solo is flying solo, flying in open is flying with everyone not in a group (solo being a group of one) and you can fly in a group of any size.

It isn't cheating it is just playing the way you choose to.

Playing Solo isn't cheating. Anyone who says it is has the mindset of a 5 year old.

I only stick to open play and enjoy the hectic 'no space to dock' outposts and the crazy 'coming in too fast' pilots with hot cargo at big stations; It adds a level of uncertainty to my gameplay. You are free to do as you please and shouldn't worry about it.

Just make sure next time you accidentally hit a player you just hose them down so they can't turn on you.
Seems a 200cr bounty is all the excuse some people need.

I open play, have not tried solo yet because I like the idea of other players being around. However... Rarely do I see any.

Play how you want, you paid your money, it is your game to do with as you please.

If "solo" wasn't an option presented by FD, then it'd be cheating, but as it's part of the game, it's not cheating.

Yea well, it's HUGE galaxy... not enough people on our planet to have one person stationed at even a small fraction of it.

Solo play is not cheating. I haven't played it myself because I played in beta/gamma and felt confident enough for open play. Sounds like the OP started off in an overcrowded area of space. I would say you could have the same experience as in solo play if you moved out of the area into a less cmdr populated region of space. I barely see another cmdr, but when I do I've found people will blow you up if they can see a risk free way to do so. Yes I'm looking at you cmdr "?", who blow me up when I took my headphones off to have a brief conversation with a friend :)

True, I do miss those haphazard encounters. Which is why I'll be going back to open before too long. I have gotten the hang of FSInterdiction which will put me in a private bit of space with my victim.

You don't? I started at LHS 3447, the 6 or 7 larger starsystems around there are all teeming with other players.

Maybe I need to be a little more adventurous and head into the unknown.

I don't see it as cheating at all. It's an option, and given that "open play" basically means "consensual PVP" I would actually say it's absolutely a necessity. Some people enjoy the thrill of always-on-PVP, some people don't.

Personally, if I am trading, then I'm not too worried about PVP so I will do it in open play. But if I am doing combat missions then I don't want to have to compete with other players for kills, and I don't want someone turning up and picking the other side just so they can shoot at me. That's not why I am there - I am there to kill NPC's. So yes I will tend to go into solo play when doing combat.

I think some of your issues could have been alleviated by branching out and traveling to less populated systems. But I don't see any problem with solo play.

I am not entirely sure most systems have more dangerous players then they have dangerous AI to be honest.
Speaking for myself I play solo but plan to keep it that way

Cheating is using hacks, mods (competitive advantage type) and exploits. Playing solo in a game that has a solo-player setting is just playing solo.

Yea, each on their own. Some prefer solo, some don't. I'd suggest people to try open however, someone (there was a post in forum, can't find the link now tho) was mainly soloer - they found open to be more fun.

Realize that most who will call you a cheater are those who want to blow you up or stop you from earning by blowing up targets before you can and the like. They find your unwillingness to play doormat to be a offensive to their sense of "fun".

Ignore it.
