Random CMDR killings caused by "race to elite" contest?

Seeing a lot of threads and posts about people getting killed, with no regard for bounties or cargo, on the forums. Could this be because of the race to elite contest? If I cared about that, I would kill everyone I see.

That's PvP for you. There's absolutely no reason for someone to not kill you. They lose nothing you lose a lot. That's "gameplay" for griefers.

Not likely. It's also worth noting that the majority of the threads about players killing players aren't started by players killed by other players BUT players speculating what damage PvP could do based on their experiences of other games.

couple of polls in the forums show the vast majority of players have had limited player interaction let alone been in combat or been killed by other players (outside combat zones that is)

but hey let's put that aside , get the pitchforks out and lynch the first 'guilty' pirate-looking player we find arrrrrrrrr

Hmm this is true.

Maybe a player killer bounty? And not one that goes when you die or one you can go pay off yourself either.

If everyone acted/reacted in the same way it'd be pointless including other people. I'm all for psychopaths destroying everything they see.

Given player-spread, I doubt it.

It'd be far quicker to farm NPCs than to specifically target players.

It's based on a sorta ELO system.

So if a player is Harmless (which most are) and you are say Novice, then you will get basically nothing for killing said players.

In order to obtain higher ranks, then you need to be killing those with higher ranks than yourself.

Players killing other players for the sake of the race to Elite is pretty pointless, as it doesn't actually help them obtain the rank of elite.

Hello Commanders!

Ya, I see what's happened here, I think. That patch note line is a little out of context thanks to its brevity. Basically, the place in the code that determines what combat rank points are awarded has moved from the code that dealt with murder crimes to somewhere else.

So really, it ought to say: don't award combat skill points when committing a murder... because we now add them at another point in the flow.

Apologies for the confusion, folks!

So combat rating increases currently only look at the ranks of the ships involved.

ie if you are wantonly murdering Harmless traders then you are not increasing your combat rank. If you "murder" someone that is also ranking up their combat rating, chances are they are equally excited about their opportunity to murder you and do the same, so game on.

No, its the griefers that PVP and pirate fans claim don't exist.

Even if it counts more than splatting NPCs are you going to advance faster than by hitting NPCs? Real players are few and far between and lurking around starter systems isn't going to get you high counting kills.

Conclusion: It may be happening but isn't a big issue.

I can guarantee that splatting an Elite Conda NPC is doing way more for your rating than a Harmless Player in a hauler.

I agree with your conclusion.
