Random CMDR killings caused by "race to elite" contest?

"Combat rating increases only look at the ranks of the ships involved."

Yeah, I remember Sandro saying that. So it's the ship comparison that matters, and this means you can get to Elite faster by killing NPC ships that are higher ranked (more combat-capable) than your own. Kill a bunch of NPC Cobras and NPC Asps while flying an Eagle or Viper, and you'll gain rank. Gank a Sidewinder or Hauler and you won't.

The quickest path to Elite would then be to target only NPC's flying better ships than your own, because they're easier to kill (mostly) and don't use shield cells to prolong the fight, like players will. You can wade through NPC kills at a much faster rate than finding players to fight.

Conclusion: It may be happening but isn't a big issue.

Probably not, although with the way FD leaks out info like that in dribs and drabs, there are probably many new players who don't understand how the ranking system works.

If PK's are happening as a result of that misunderstanding in the pursuit of rank (and not just because players like to do it), then that is entirely FD's fault for the lack of documentation on this game. I just checked the current PDF Manual, and nope... of course, they don't explain it there.

I hear about this sort of thing a lot, but have only been jumped/attacked for no reason twice since I started premium beta way back when. I have yet to encounter this sort of thing in release.

Combat rating increases only look at the ranks of the ships involved.

ie if you are wantonly murdering Harmless traders then you are not increasing your combat rank. If you "murder" someone that is also ranking up their combat rating, chances are they are equally excited about their opportunity to murder you and do the same, so game on.

^^ This is true, I'm at expert now, I'd love someone to come and try to murder me, but alas I never see anyone let alone get attacked.

Hear that - I'm a willing murder victim, I'll even shot first so it won't count as a murder.

I am more concerned with those griefer NPC's who interdict you and just shoot with out you doing anything, everytime I report one there seems to be 10 that take there place, what do I do?

Those are either:
  • Members of a faction that is actively hostile to you. (it's possible they may shoot on sight)
  • Members of the same faction as the wanteds they saw you boiling. (this can aggro them to the point they open fire if you do enough of it)
  • NPC pirates. (they don't always do the cheesy "what treats are you carrying?" comm, sometimes they immediately decide you're going to fight not drop cargo and move right along to opening fire)

Can't be true, didn't you get the memo? There is nothing dangerous about playing in Open. Free money all day baby.

Not likely. It's also worth noting that the majority of the threads about players killing players aren't started by players killed by other players BUT players speculating what damage PvP could do based on their experiences of other games.

couple of polls in the forums show the vast majority of players have had limited player interaction let alone been in combat or been killed by other players (outside combat zones that is)

but hey let's put that aside , get the pitchforks out and lynch the first 'guilty' pirate-looking player we find arrrrrrrrr

What do you mean? I was interdicted earlier, no comms, no scan, I was immediately fired upon, shields stripped, had to run. Got no response to my comms. Just managed to jump out with 12% hull.

Are you claiming there are very few PKers?

I haven't been confronted by a single player pirate in the whole time since PreBeta, only killers. Some have destroyed me, some I escaped, not one has ever demanded cargo or shown any interest in anything other than blowing up my ship. It's getting quite predictable and rather boring.

I'm considering going solo just to avoid the wasted time.

These are interdictions in SC and I am allied to the federation and empire and friendly in Alliance so what gives?

That's PvP for you. There's absolutely no reason for someone to not kill you. They lose nothing you lose a lot. That's "gameplay" for griefers.

Cept the reason to kill the griefer increases exponentially every time they grief.

You cant extrapolate from your own experience, you must be very unlucky, most players are not being attacked on the regular by other players.

farming players skyrockets the combat status especially if victims are in combat capable ships.

No this is wrong, the ship type has no effect or rank as far as i can see. Its the combat rank of the player and the bounty they have on them, when you hand in bounties you'll gain rank certainly not from just killing large "combat capable ships" :)

It's based on a sorta ELO system.

So if a player is Harmless (which most are) and you are say Novice, then you will get basically nothing for killing said players.

In order to obtain higher ranks, then you need to be killing those with higher ranks than yourself.

Players killing other players for the sake of the race to Elite is pretty pointless, as it doesn't actually help them obtain the rank of elite.

Your source for this information?

I haven't even been interdicted by a player, not even an attempt made

enjoy solo because....... some commanders just can't handle Elite
