Upgraded Frame Shift Drive - now I'm stuck in one system

You might want to consider seeing if you can upgrade your power distributor and/or Reactor, if you have the cash, which might get you some more distance.

* frown * I didn't think Elite allowed you to buy and fit drives that are incompatible, they should show up as red.

when you buy anything for your ship check the ratings on the buy screen before you purchase. most everything should be blue for it to be worthwhile. Made the exact same mistake in my cobra but redocked and bought my old drive back. You shouldn't be able to buy kit that doesn't work for your ship and hopefully soon you won't be able to but for now be careful.

Hope you get it sorted.

Yeah that is a bit messed up.

People really need to pay more attention in this game though, and always use the compare option. Pay attention to the info for your ship, I mean it tells you right there what's going to change as far as mass, power usage, jump range, etc.

It's even color coded in red if it's a negative change and blue for positive changes. It really couldn't be much more obvious.

But you know, we've all made some sort of mistake in ED. That's the beauty of this game, it allows you to make mistakes and penalizes you for it.

EDIT: OP, you may want to consider stripping your ship down of everything you can to decrease mass, so you can jump farther until you find a proper FSD. Sell guns, discovery scanner, anything to save mass.

Self destructed but was given back same spec - dodgy FSD.

So, self destructed and back to Thomas Hub :(

Had Been travelling away as fast I could - will head out in a different direction now... in a Sidewinder, not my beloved Cobra.

For future reference, you can choose which components of your old loadout are re-fitted when you self-destruct. If you de-select any of them, then the default selections for that class of ship are fitted instead, and the rebuy cost adjusted accordingly.

In your case, de-selecting the FSD would result in you getting the correct class of FSD fitted in its' place, the basic model with the lowest rating but the appropriate class nonetheless.

You don't have this option (to deselect the FSD) with free ships. I just got hit with this exact same situation. Had to revert to a free Sidewinder and then buy the Cobra new...

Still, at least I found a nice and easy trade route which is all in one system... Saving up for 2xBeam gimbals before moving on.

I did exactly the same thing, but i started with a sidewinder, mined my way up to a hauler then got my cobra, found a good system and managed to get my self 1 million credits, so i thought i would upgrade things, i bought as higher class as i could, and when i went to the galaxy map to do a bit of exploring i found i had a jump distance of 1.8 light years. i gathered i had mucked something up so i went to change everything back and there wasnt a but back option (i didnt leave the station) the only way i could resolve it was to sell my cobra for a sidewinder then exchange it for another cobra with standard stuff on it, on the plus side i fitted it with a 6 bin refinery, as the station doesnt have the medium beam lasers or multi cannons that i had previously. i feel your pain, but it wont take long till you get back on your feet.

you learn by your mistakes, now i know how the class system works
