Blueprints, Manufacturing Unique Items And Counterfeit Goods

Surely you are crafting your own ship in that you decide how much fuel to carry so that limits how far you can go, you decide what engine to fit to your ship which dictates how much cargo space is left and how efficiently it uses the fuel, what armaments to include etc etc .
We do not need to craft anything ourselves, the various ship manufacturers comes up with their own enhancements for you to buy if you can find them at a suitable price i.e. buy the ship you want at s good price but it is in a system that doesn't have the right engine or scanner or life support for passenger pod so you travel to another system in order to get them - is that not crafting in a way if so what more do you need - you are a pilot crafting your craft, not an explosives engineer trying to create a better bomb etc

The 1% of today tend to get custom jobs of various items that cost a fortune - That's the point.

I don't agree with the blueprint / counterfeit goods angle but liking the manufacturing of unique items - why not if you're rich enough to afford it ? Most people (myself included) will probably never reach those dizzy heights but some will ..

Im sorry to bust everyone's bubble but I'm 99% sure that David has said that there will be no crafting in ED. This is not Eve online.

Personally I'm glad for that, but do I think there are related ideas that could potentially work and add to the game. Even though I have an irrational hate of crafting, I bet there's something that's like crafting which I'd quite enjoy.

Personally I'm against the idea, and like Slawkenbergius I'm pretty sure Mr B is too.

In the event that some sort of crafting IS allowed, I really don't like the whole skill points idea. That is VERY un-ED. You skill should be entirely about what you can do, not about how many points you have accrued.

That's my understanding of it as well.

my two cents is that crafting should be limited to jerry rigging (or paying some NPC outfit) to reverse engineer some discovered piece of space junk/artifact picked up whilst exploring ect.

I think any such item should have a minor tweak to a specific piece of equipment fitted to - say boosts sensor strength by 10% - but there is a counter cost to running it, so say ships shields are 5% less effective and so on. Also I would suggest that there is a limit to how many of these modules can be fitted to any one ship and to remove one, destroys it for good.

Elite Dangerous will not need crafting, in the shape of EVE, NWN, WOW, ESO etc, to keep the majority of us interested (IMO).

I am very sure that Frontier have a huge number of ideas/experiences that they will not disclose in any forum other than through the game experience in missions, rep, exploration, planet fall etc...who knows, maybe at some point you can be a major stakeholder in a manufacturing company which allows you to make investment choices for products?

Edit; I do see player development being a very distinct possibility. The moment you can walk about a station, ship, planet means that a whole new set of exciting possibilities open up. Maybe they introduce something like Peter F Hamilton's concept of a memory upload saved in a clone memory bank which is activated once you are officially dead. There by your new 2nd self (clone with memory from the last point of upload with saved skills/stats) is released...

Personally I'd rather not see player crafting in Elite: Dangerous - just personal preference though as I just don't think it fits well, and I'm over crafting anyway, from other games.

What I would like to see though are some rare (and difficult) missions where perhaps some researcher tasks us to go and collect/obtain some particularly rare components from various locations and bring them back to aid in his/her research, perhaps with the result that he/she constructs for us a specific component or weapon for our ship. I gather some there will be special rewards like ships and such from certain missions so perhaps actually having to collect certain components could add a bit of a crafting-like feel to such content?
