I'll be honest here, this isn't what I wanted.

I wanted EvE Online, with smaller scale manual skill-based combat. Which means the core elements of player interactivity, player influence (crafting and owning your own stations and systems) is missing. What is here is a beautifully rendered single player space trading simulator with amazing (but pointless) combat and amazing (but pointless) exploration.

ED is amazing at what it does, but it really doesn't do what I thought it was about. Though that is my fault for not researching it enough. To those who can enjoy a game that really isn't about affecting the galaxy directly or interacting with other players, I hope you have a lot of fun. It just isn't for me, and I have to say I am a bit depressed on that. I got far too excited, far too quickly.

Sorry you don't like it. There are many of us who do. Personally I've never played Eve. I've been playing Elite and it's sequels and unofficial remakes since 1985. Elite: Dangerous, with present flaws included, is exactly the game I've been waiting for.

When EVE first came out in 2003 it had similar reactions from people... here are some:

"Little more than an exercise in monotony. [Sept 2003, p.77]"
~ GMR Magazine

"Both space travel and mining - two of the biggest time-consumers of play - are so boring after the first time through that they are referred to a "time to make a sandwich".
~ Gamefeed Magazine

"EVE offers little in the way of instant gratification, and progress in the game is slow and often unnoticeable."
~ Gamespot

"Probably the best looking, worst playing space-based MMO I've ever spent time with. [Aug 2003, p.101]"
~ Game Informer

"Action hungry thrill-mongers will do themselves a favor by steering clear of this one."
~ Adrenaline Vault

"It is possible to have fun in this game. The bad news is that there are some underlying structural problems that make the game horribly unfriendly to new players and will probably keep the game from being as popular as it might be."
~ Gamespy

So you see... EvE wasn't always the fantastic game so many hundreds of thousands adore... It grew into what it is today.
Lets give Elite Dangerous AT LEAST half the time it took Eve to evolve... 5 years... or no... lets expect ED to do it in one fourth of the time it took Eve to grow... 2.5 years.
I'm pretty certain it will grow, and much faster that that.

To the OP:
Though of a different opinion, I bow to your very mature and honest statement. Rare enough nowadays to be appreciated. Please be welcome to revisit later, after some evolution.
Have some rep!

is boring for many people, and game reputation is going down. In next few months many people will forget about this game

The evidence I have seen indicates the exact opposite. Every review has been positive.

Almost everyone saying that Elite is bad and it will fail are right here in this forum.

Well done, Have rep. And that's what the reviewers were saying! Imagine, please, the forums.

Well I hope you stick with it, or come back in the spring. After all there's no sub fees (at least not for a few years).

It's not a game where you will rule the galaxy, but you can change it if you want. Players right now are making changes. Overthrowing governments. Instigating invasions.

But they are contributing as single players. Lone pilots, banding together, and moving on, and reforming. Making a difference in a plausible and specific way.

I'd like to see wings and better communications, but I wouldn't want to see the huge imbalance that would result from permanent capital infrastructure in the hands of players.

Me, I'm going to make enough for a surface scanner and then I'm off to the Pleiades.

See you in space commander (maybe).

Personally I think it is a very good game with alot of promise.
The learning curve can be a bit steep for some but once you get the basics its easy.

Starting can be a bit (a lot) of a grind but once you are up and running you can do such varied things it makes it more fun and interesting.
I only have a Cobra III but its is great :)
I now do bounty hunting trading exploring and missions some times all in one run lol I haved had more enjoyment the more I advance.
Will get to try a bit of mining maybe one day! lol
Do not give up too quick that is all I can say.

But every single one of those statements is something I'd still say about EvE today. I still can't understand what makes it fun for some people...the activities that aren't mind-numbingly boring are governed solely by the equipment, desires, and numbers of other people, which most often seems to be based in sadism and schadenfreude.

In any case, OP isn't telling us he's bored or that the game lacks content, like the other threads, he's simply stating this wasn't what he was expecting and he did indeed want EvE with a cockpit, and that's fine. Unfortunately for him, that's not what it is. Although what it is isn't what I want it to be...yet.

I feel Elite: Dangerous has a lot more depth than many people are giving it credit for, but they lake the imagination or resolve to explore that depth, and would rather have it handed to them.

Sorry to hear that you're not enjoying it, though I must congratulate you on your refreshingly resposible attitude in the midst of a lot of whinging and demanding threads demanding the game change to something completely other than an "Elite" game. This is far from the only space game coming out in the near future so I hope one of those will be more to your tastes. Personally this is EXACTLY (well close to exactly) what I was looking for, but not eveyone wants the same thing. If you change your mind about ED I look forward to seeing you in game, and if not I wish you luck in your gaming future.

I'm glad ED is nothing like EVE, I love both games but I'm also glad that they are very different so that I can alternate between them and really appreciate what makes each game special.

If you want EVE play EVE. A game that focuses on developing deep mechanics and a player driven world is not going to focus on having cool first person "skill based" flight, and vice versa. Elite needs planetary landings not spreadsheets. You can always play both.

just out of curiosity... how much do you affect what goes on around planet earth? You are one person, you are not going to change the universe by yourself. I for one am glad that players can not roam around in packs controlling areas of space and causing trouble.

I too was hoping for a small-scale Eve. What people are not getting is the words, "small-scale". What are people asking for when they ask for an EvE?

- Multiplayer, or at least, multiplayer communications. The comms systems fail horribly in E: D currently
- Persistant universe (mmo). This won't happen. Ever.
- Better depth to core gameplay mechanics.
- A self-evolving galaxy, affected by player interactions. We only have a glimmer of this.
- Sandbox gameplay. Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox. It is a non-directed theme park game without any rides, due to the lack of the above 4 items.

I've said it before, but the only thinking keeping me playing Elite is it's implementation of VR, and how good it is. Oculus has stated they wanted a "killer-app", well, for me, Elite Dangerous is the "killer-app" for the Rift. And the Rift is the "killer-periphreal" for Elite.

Kudos OP. I think this has to be the first "I don't like this game" where the poster has accepted they should have researched it more first before buying. +1.

Sorry to hear its not your sort of game. For many of us, its awesome and we see only great things for the game.

Perhaps you could give it another try, and instead of looking at it from the perspective of "I want something like Eve" just accept it as being a different type of game?

And that's all it was ever billed to be, ED is ED, Eve is Eve, never the twain shall meet.

I hope that the expansion packs will fill it with life. I returned to play the final release but it's still like... I don't know, half a year ago. Dead empty space.
I have no idea what the exploration or conflict is about - it's lifeless and repetitive.
You summed it up nicely - it's probably a space trading simulator. And single player at that. Even in open I have yet to see a single cmdr... that's just crazy.

They could literally shrink the size by 100000 and maybe, just maybe, interactions would develop. But then again, with the current comm implementation I doubt things would be meaningful. I mean, what's there to do? Fly next to each other while hauling beer? Or maybe gank a few fresh sidewinders in A grade vipobras?
I'm really hoping to see something regarding the scope of the DLC. And I hope it's not just another mega creep feature like planet side landing on empty dustballs. I'm hoping for something that makes it a game and not just a 3D engine for an Excel spreadsheet simulator.

I've seen loads of CMDR's. Killed a few and been killed by a couple. even chased down a CMDR with a bounty on his head and was engaged by another CMDR after the same bounty. it was awesome.

ED = so far so good for me.
