Auto Repair Unit doesnt do what it says on the tin?

don't ask how, I have no idea.
some NPC chancer in a sidey with what felt like twin rails got on my 6 and hit me a few times whilst I was tailing some juicy bounty.
radar was crazy with blips at the time, no idea who was friend or foe, system authority ships were in force too.
It didn't take much.
a few seconds and shields were offline!
thats when I knew I was being shot at by multiple targets, as there was no way my prey was hitting enough rounds to drop my shields.
I finished him off and put full power to sys, turned to face new target, the Sidewinder with twin Death Star Cannons.
one pass was all it took, dropped his shields, cut his hull down to 50%, but I took another round to my hull and all of a sudden im drifting!

like... how?

Hull still at 63%.

frantically checking modules, there it is in red: THRUSTERS 0%

*insert expletive here*

now what?

drift for a bit?

police chased off my would be assassin.

do the engines come back on after a while or what?

this has never happened before, so im left wondering, intrigued.
what if I had an auto repair unit?
yes, great plan, soon as i get back, i'll fit one.
but slowly it dawned, I wasn't getting back.
and neither was I gonna cash in the 100k of bounties.
I was gonna have to hit the self destruct.

paid the insurance, dumped the fuel scoop, fitted the Auto Repair Unit, and heard the crackle over the comms:
"hey bro, I think you better read the manual that came with that thing, says here they don't work on main thrusters..."

???

really?

why not??

if ever there was a reason not to fit umpteen shield booster units (ok, I only had one, and I never had to use it in nav beacons anyway, not getting hit seemed like a much better defence) it would be to fit a rather handy sounding AUTO REPAIR UNIT, right?
seems like, if we want to have ships that are fitted for combat, then repair units would make sense, right?
but if they don't fix the blown motor, then what is the point?
LOL

Unfortunately for you the auto maintenance unit fixes "most modules". That does not extend to thrusters, though. You can tell which ones it fixes in the module tab. If you can select a module for repair, it's fixable (toggle the on/off switch to the left of the module - when the maintenance unit is attached, there's a third setting for repair).

It's okay. Even as you die, you'll die knowing that you could use your discovery scanner to go BWAAAAAAAH and pretend that you're the Inception trailer.

y'know,
I can live with busted systems.
pretty much any system...
EXCEPT THE BLOODY MAIN DRIVE
lol
oh for a spanner and some magnetic boots....

You'd be surprised how many systems are actually critical... Almost all of them, yes, that's how many :)

Only shields and lifesystem are optional. All the other ones are required to land & repair.

fair enough, but what's the point in being able to fix any of them if you cant get the engines back online??
surely, if your weapons are taken out, its time to head home and get fresh lick of paint, but having an auto repair unit that doesn't fix the engines, considering youre giving up a whole slot to fit the bloody thing, and considering how likely it is that your engines are the thing that will get targeted, seems a little shortsighted.

So much for my idea.

..... but having an auto repair unit that doesn't fix the engines....

Heh. Came to forums for info on the auto maintenance units and within about two seconds of seeing your post I was like, "well that answers that". I'm in total agreement with you, if I can't fix the engines then why bother?

It does suck that AFM doesn't fix thrusters. Really dont understand their thinking on this. Switch em off to do so sure

I quite agree, the AFM not being able to repair the thrusters (even if only enough to allow you to limp home) makes it the second most useless module in game...after the docking computer. :)

I wouldnt call it useless. Im currently exploring deep space with a D 4 onboard...and boy am I glad to have it, after a few bumps and mishaps. Prolly a quarter of its ammo left.

Wouldn't it be great if...

We could send an 'SOS Signal' and other players come with some drones and repair our ship for a fee(maybe sell you some fuel and ammo at the same time), or, pirates get the SOS and descend on you to scavenge your remains. Damaged ships, even destroyed ship parts should have some value to be salvaged.

Would add another career to the game...Logistics: Supply and Haulage!

Speaking of that... I've never tried the repair thing. The more I read about it, the less elements it seems to be able to repair.

So... Instead of listing those... Can anyone enlight me on what this thing can actually *do*?

BTW, did anyone try to request docking in morse code, using ship lights? Maybe that's the solution :)

Agree with OP. We should also be able to call for a tow if we're near a populated system and our thrusters are down! I love that the cops just left the OP to die after chasing off the aggressors.
