Much higher Fuel cost for new ship???

Hi pilots,

I changed from my old "Hauler" to my new "Cobra MK III".
I'm flying the same route like before: ~8.8 LY costs me ~25 CR when refulling with the "Hauler".
But with the "Cobra" it costs me ~850 CR!!!!!
thats 34x times higher as before!

Is this normal?

Bigger ship, and over 12x the mass = more fuel for same distance
Bit like moving from a small town car to a truck miles per gallon wise

Cheapest fuel scoop is 300 credits and it gives you like 9 units/s at 99% temperature (if your temp starts rising above 100 , soon your ship will start taking damage). After this I got myself Class 1, rating A, and he does scooping of 42 units/s at 97% temperature.

It makes sense. Spaceships are just different kind of cars. And like cars, the bigger the ship, the bigger engine you need and bigger fuel consumption you have.

Just get D4 fuel scoop and you will never have to worry about fuel again.

Fuel scooping is fun, at least i enjoy it anyways.

I had an A6 scoop on my Space Cow (27 million quids worth)

852/Sec. Gaaaazzzuuuuuunk..."Fuel Scooping Complete" :D

To the OP.

I upgraded from an Adder to a Cobra. Nearly feel off my seat when I found out that 1 unit of fuel was now 10x more expensive.

I can understand filling a 16 unit fuel tanking costing more than an 8 unit fuel tank, but why is the fuel per unit more expensive?.

At the moment it feels to me like I have an Escort I have to pay £1 per litre, the next person comes onto the garage forecourt with a Jag and they are told they have to pay £10 per litre.

Running with a fuel scoop now to offset the cost of fuel.

Then don't Buy anything bigger it only gets worse.

I think i need to pay nearly half a million for a depleted tank right now (didn't check as I'm using a fuel scoop till eternity) ;)

I agree with this. A 16 ton tank is a 16 ton tank, regardless of what ship it's on! Another design flaw which can be easily fixed. Gas is gas, if the developers want to balance financial issues regarding owning a bigger ship, that should be done with repair costs, not fuel!

Switched to a Cobra yesterday and was appalled by the fuel costs. I don't trade much and am more into bounty hunting. Casual trading now barely earns any profit and even missions that used to be very profitable are far less interesting now. Having to do a boring fuel scooping mini-game every time just to save on fuel costs? Really is that the solution? In addition the fuel costs do not add up to the specs you get when you upgrade your FSD in the ship yard. There it said "Max Fuel per Jump: 2T". That would be about 200 Cr for 10 Ly. I agree that a Cobra probably should need more fuel than an Eagle or Hauler does, but jumping 19 Ly for 2500 Cr is too much for my taste. In addition I don't care much for the much larger turn radius of the Cobra. Even the Viper isn't more maneuverable than the Cobra, which I find annoying, considering it's supposed to be a fighter.

I guess I'll switch back to my Eagle. I can do easy missions there that will earn a profit, and it's more fun to fly. :-/ To be honest that really limits my options in what to do now. No more interesting ships to buy, after all the rest are basically freighters or almost capital ships, so why earn more money?

I went from a Type 7 to a Python with nearly identical specs and mass; my fuel cost for the same trip went from 3k to 30k... that's not scaling based on hull mass. it's just arbitrary based on ship value.

Basic question, what amount of cargo are you carrying? If you aren't in a "trading fit" Cobra, you might not be carrying enough to offset your fuel without scooping. Try maxing your cargo hold space, if then you can't make a profit you've got the wrong route. The Cobra holds up to 50t, so even if you are only at half that you should be waaay more than covering your fuel costs with any decent run. If you're not getting at veryleast 600Cr/tonne/leg, find a new route.

You're right of course. If I set my mind to it when it comes to trading I should easily make a profit. To be honest so far I've never found a route that got me 600 Cr / Tonne / leg. :)
As I said I only trade very casually. It doesn't hold much interest for me. So I check the BPC tool, and take some stuff with me in order not to fly empty. I had an 8T cargo hold in the Eagle, and that always payed nicely for the fuel and the multi cannon ammo, so I always had more than 100% profit on the bounty. Currently I only have 22T cargo hold. Haven't upgraded the two 8T cargo holds to 16T yet, but will do that.

BTW: Back to the fuel issue. The Cobra only has a 16T fuel tank. Since Hydrogen fuel only costs between 90 and 150 Cr it's hard to imagine how that can result in roughly 8.000 Cr for a completely empty fuel tank. Must be the taxes ... ;-)

Exactly and that's kind of annoying IMHO. It's like with the prices for the ships. Those were chosen so that people are forced to make lots of money in order to get a bigger ship. Which might make sense in ED. However if this were the real world, the price difference between a Cobra and an ASP were completely unrealistic. If I were a businessman, I'd buy 2 Cobras and employ 2 pilots before I bought a single ASP which has about the same Cargo capacity as 2 Cobras but costs as much as 20 Cobras. :)

Remember, BPC and the like will allow you to set minimum profits, let the tool search and be prepared to do up to say 30ly each way. Bigger profits generally come from the higher priced commodities, Beryllium, Superconducters etc, so you will need to build a trading kitty of around 10k per tonne of cargo your ship can carry. Remeber that's IN ADDITION TO your insurance money.

You don't say where you are, but I'll pop a route suggestion via PM that should get you 1200cr/t each way :)

Thanks for your effort. Yep I got the basic jist of waht BPC can do. Very very useful tool.
I'm currently hanging around Erevate and Potriti. The first is a nice system with different kind of products (Agriculture, Refinery etc), the latter offers interesting and profitable missions, a Federation outpost, that always needs all kind of stuff and an Anarchy outpost with and a lot of wanted NPCs. In addition GD 219 provides all those nice ship upgrades in a high tech system, while there are several systems around that are interesting too. I'm sure this region can be very profitable and since many people started out in LHS 3447 I guess there's also plenty of expertise.

Don't understand this thread. Fuel scoops should the first upgrade you make. If you can afford that cobra then surely you afford a half decent fuel scoop? I never pay for fuel. Really. It's that simple.

me <- puzzled

It's quite possible to make money fast enough that the opportunity cost of the lost time and cargo space negates (or even outweighs) any savings possible via scooping. To take a concrete (but non-Cobra) example, I was making 200k each way in my Type 7, my fuel costs were 2-3k each way. To get a big enough scoop to not spend 50% of my time scooping, I would have to sacrifice much more cargo space (and therefore profit) than I would have saved by scooping.

Now I'm in a Python and the costs are ~60k each way, it makes much more financial sense to scoop as I go!
