Exploring - the cheapest options

People said you could explore with the Hauler, so I got myself a hauler and started doing trading to earn some money for scanners and all. But once I got the Hauler I also noticed it's useless for exploring, not for the exploring task itself, but you can't see "anything" outside of the cockpit. It's like wearing a helmet.

Is there an option that's not super expensive that I can aim at instead of the Hauler? Does the Adder have attributes and a canopy that fits an explorer that likes to screenshot or Rift it far away? Or should I perhaps just aim back at the Sidey.

Maybe it didn't come through clearly, but even if I get the advanced scanner (which is a costly beast), I like to gaze at the beauty, high res screenshot the beauty etc. in addition to scanning it :) And the Hauler really is very cramped, coming from Eagle and Sidey.

Thanks for the tips on following clean NPCs and such, logical but not something I've thought of.

My last exploration run was in a sidewinder with no shields and an advanced disco and detailed surface scan. You have to plot your route careful cause it has a small fuel tank but it worked fine and has great visibility.

I went straight up 600ly... Took about 8 hours scanning stuff, made 700k.

Or or if you wana spend a bunch of money on repairs and such get an asp

If you remove the shields the sidey is a great ship for exploration.

I guess you're not going to invest in an advanced discovery scanner as you want something cheap, so the sidey is probably the best here: look through the top of your canopy and fly around the stars in a spiraling pattern, finding planets that way is extremely easy.

I have done some minor exploring in a sidey, but I'd have to go at least intermediate scanner this time, preferably advanced, but I'll see, it takes a while to generate money trading it seems :)

That whole no-shields thing I did too, it's a tad scary though. I managed to find quite a few distant stars, but I also chased some blind spots a few times ;)

When you put an advanced scanner in a sidey, does insurance cost add up to numbers referable to the cost of the scanner? Or how does that work? Like would the rebuy cost be 200 000?

The adder is a great ship for exploring. It has more than enough utility spaces, and good jump ranges. It's fuel tank also allows you to cruise through large areas without needing to refuel, brown dwarves.

I switched from ASP to Adder. The cockpit sight is quite limited compared to other ships but with an ADS not a huge issue. With A3 FSD and fully equipped Adder the jumprange is over 22 ly.

I agree completely. Note please that the adder's intended role is exploration. I think it's better than either of the sidewinder or hauler for that.

Some advantages:
1. The adder absolutely sips fuel.
2. You get the same utility space as a hauler once you upgrade the storage area (at a cost of about $3K, big whoop). More utility space than a sidewinder.
3. It's more maneuverable than a hauler.
4. It has more weaponry than either of the hauler and sidewinder.

I'd save for an adder, and make it into a $500K-$600K ship before you even think of upgrading.

I found the Adder's cockpit visibility interesting (it's a nice cockpit) but rather limited.

I suppose if I were to remove the shields from a ship (it's not something I ever do) then the Eagle would be my choice, lovely to fly and a good view from the cockpit.

You can explore with a sidewinder if you want. A big FSD and lightweight components takes you far. And the open cockpit is definitely useful.

Not used an adder but a cobra is a pretty good exploration vessel and cargo space for some rare trading to keep the pennies coming in...
