new player concerned with community

Hi all sorry to ask this, but I only got the game today and I am reading these forums and see a lot of not very nice discussions and even border on abuse some times . Is this generally how things are on here , or is it just a few that are like this . I want to play in a nice community with good people who help each other and not abuse , just because they have a different opinion.?

Not at all ... in-game most people are really cool and helpful.

The forums however seem to have been overtaken by the vocal minority from 'another game'

I imagine it's not helped by the ban-hammer happy folks that have chased away the old-timers.

As far as I've seen the forum is divided between levelheaded "average" gamers, people who are against literally any change to the game whatsoever, people who hate things being added to the game which wouldn't affect them at all, and people who as far as I can tell haven't played a single game since the original Elite and have far lower standards for depth and complexity than what I'd expect from most people.

There are many friendly and helpful people on here who are only too happy to be of service.

There are also some complete numps who couldn't find water with a working tap.

Just like any other game forum really :)

take a peak in the newcommer forums. you can tell a lot about a community by the way it treats its newbies.

there will always be something players will disagree about when it comes to game balance and design, sometimes those are discussions, sometimes they are arguments. this doesn't mean those arguing will be nasty when you bump into them in game.

in game the biggest problem is the lack of communication. sometimes even if 2 players want to talk, unless they stop what they are doing chances are they will get taken out of the same chat instance and will then not be able to talk unless they were quick to friend each other.

Sadly this is only too true :(

At the moment ... hopefully that will change over time :D

The community in game and in more specific parts of the forum bears little resemblance to that on the general discussion sections, don't worry. It's the usual problem with game forums - pick a game, any game and check out their forums - if they're not locked down to the point of unusability, there will be a circle of trolls trying to validate their existence by hurling abuse at each other. :)

the forums are new, the game was rushed * good and bad aspects * there are no devs active because they are all on hoilidays, theres some skeleton staff who appear to not be posting but are monitory things server side and making some tweaks to address big issue ( poiltical influence expansion aspects of the meta game being one) but it would appear a passive noting of reported bugs, major threads small issues being addressed, once the dev team are back on jan 5 we can expect patching so just wait a week things should start moving quickly

Anyone can join the forums, not just people that play the game.
I'd say the forums have descended into what they are now after being about the nicest forums I've ever seen in beta.

The main issue at the moment is just exactly what this game is.
Its was marketed as an MMO and is still marketed as a multiplayer game.

New players get in and discover the multiplayer parts of the game aren't what they expected, and get on the forums and complain.

Mostly around here people get out what they put in. There's always going to be hotheads anywhere in any community so judging all of us by what a few baiting posters say (just throw them on ignore, that's what it's there for) isn't really fair. The people who take the most heat are the ones who come in with topics like "Is this really all there is? This sucks" or "This is so stupid", or they complain about something as if it's bleeding obvious that they have the only right opinion about the matter and anyone who doesn't is just a fanboy, while they offer no other option for consideration. There are lots of very kind, helpful people here, and just meeting people half way in a considerate manner is all it takes to draw them out.

It's rough around here right now because the game is in poor, rushed shape by many people's estimate, while many others feel the opposite, hilarity ensues! The polarized camps log in and do battle everyday, then some actually go play the game as well.

The community here is truly awesome.

you will find differing opinions on the game but most are here because they want it to succeed. I've been involved since April(late alpha)
  • You will find there are those that feel the game was rushed to release
  • Those that have issues with the specific game mechanics
  • Those that think the game is fine for now but expect rapid improvement.
  • Some are patient with frontier while others think they are not moving fast enough
  • You will also see arguments threads as well as those who try to stir up trouble

I would say the vast majority are united in their passion for ED and desire for the game to be all it can be.

I personally think Frontier has done a remarkable job and will be in this for the long haul while acknowledging that there are issues to be worked out.

Its a gaming forum, not really any different from any other gaming forum Ive ever seen. In real life you have peacekeepers and firestarters, nice guys and dbags. The only difference here is anonymity has a nasty habit of letting people show their true character, or lack thereof by a multiple of 10. It is what it is, you can accept that and take the good with the bad, or you decide to just forgo the whole thing. Up to you.

I have kick started several games now.

Elite Dangerous has turned out to be the best.
Much worse things has happened to other games I backed, but that is the risk you take (which is offset by the cheaper initial cost).

As for the forums. I think these forums are actually doing mostly OK. Sure there is a lot of disagreements, but I've seen a lot worse elsewhere.
I think the majority of Elite Dangerous gamers are of a more mature age then gamers of most other games.

95% of the Commanders are either Killers, enslavers, cupide traders, and cowards who run away (explorers)

no surprise that 95% of threads are bad, but luckily we can evolve, and since we can't go any lower than that well it means that we can only become better right ? :p

It's fine here, better than it was.
All you need is a nonsense meter and the ability to say your piece and then leave it.
There are some very helpful people here and genuine questions do receive genuine answers...mostly :)
