Exploring - Chances of finding another station and how to you find the blighter!

Hey all,

I have started the game in the middle of nowhere and am going in a single direction hopefully further and further into unchartered space so that I can really enjoy exploring. I have a fuel scoop attached so that I can keep going but so far all I have found are planets and belts but nothing else...

Questions:
- How do I find items orbiting planets?
- What are the chances of finding a station to be able to sell my cartographic information out in the expanses of space?
- What else can be found exploring? anyone else taking on this journey that fancies sharing their experiences?

Just for the record, I'm loving it too!!!!

From what I've found, stars that show in white (rather than grey) seem to have stations, they are often grouped in an area with 100's of light years between, last exploration run I did gave me about 80 data cash ins when I finally got back to a station.

I'm just using a sidey at the minute, and jumping in, scooping and scanning and moving on to the next system in my route - I've got a 2nd level scoop (24/s) which I fitted by throwing out the cargo rack and upgraded the power dist & FSD so I can get 12ly range.

I often plot 100ly routes, it's not a great paying job, but you do make a lot of profit as you spend virtually nothing on fuel and the occasional repair needed by overcooking the 150% temp when scooping.
Haven't been interdicted yet, as I always (so far) manage to win the mini game and escape to live another day ;)

If there is a station in system it will show up in the navigation list, you do not have to find them.

On the galaxy map, if the star is grey then there will be nothing there. You will need to go to green, blue, red or orange highlighted stars to find a station.

Drifting slightly off topic, but I don't understand how any system with a station in it can be class as unexplored. Doesn't make sense to me.

You have already installed basic discovery scanner. With it you can scan around you 500Ls.But you need to put your discovery scanner in fire group and manually trigger it.
Later you will need a detailed surface scanner for detailed scanning already raw explored stellar objects. You dont need to activate surface sanner, just to fly toward some planet, belt etc, and scanner will start to scan from a certain distance.Later you will upgrade your basic discovery scanner with intermediate discovery scanner (1000 Ls) and Advanced discovery scanner (whole sys). Then you can sell your discovered carthographic 20 ly from discovered position.

There's no need to get burnt while fuel scooping. It sounds like your doing a flying scoop rather than a static scoop. What you need to do is start fuel scooping then move up to the highest point above the star and slow down as far as you can in Super Cruise. You can then sit there at a much lower temp and continue to scoop fuel. If you find the right spot your temperature will remain static as well. No more cripsy fuel scoops!

It's not unexplored. It's just that you have no data on the stellar and planetary bodies within the system.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have the relevant scanners and have been happily exploring away but going further and further away from what I "think" is "known" space. I'm wondering if I will accidentally bump into a system with a station or I should turn around?

Just to add, It seems that the best way to make money with exploration is to get to the edge of known populated space, then fly 20ly out and explore every identified object you can from as many jumps as possible around that location. when you are bored, fly back and then sell the data to a station that is more than 20ly away from where you were exploring.

I did look around to see if different stations would offer more money but it seems to be a fixed price.

My intention is to amass enough credits to purchase the asp then I will just fly off into unknown space as far as I can to see what I find....

This is prettymuch what I do though I wotk on around 100 ly out and try to hit every system in a 100 ly triangle moving away from the edge of populated space. Then fill in the gaps in the triangle. Dont know why I picked a triangle!
.
My intermediate discovery scanner doesn't always pick up secondary stars in a system but they often appear anyway on the system schematic map view once you're insystem. Gives a hint that there is more to find.
