Gimbled vs Fixed weapons

I could manually aim at the sub-system with fixed weapons? To me his post sounds like you weren't able to hit them without gimballed, but maybe I got that wrong.

I'm able to take out the drives of an anaconda before the shields recharge with 2 fixed, class 2 beam lasers.

Drives. Sure no problem with fixed. But why target drived when you can destroy the ship by targetting FSD or Power plant instead? To have a high hit rate on FSD or PP gimballed is almost required. You want to hit the FSD and at the same time do evasive manouvers

Once the the drives are out there is no chance of escape and no being out maneuvered, just stay at 2.5km and pick off the shields or cargo hatch, power plant and watch them tumble in space with no chance of retaliation
Drives can be disabled very quickly, the power plant still takes a lot of hits before being destroyed and in all that time the ship is still able to fight back.
I also find that fixed beam lasers are still very effective at hitting sub components at extreme range.

Your right, you can do it without them. I prefer to use the gimbals in the opponents power plant, it makes life easier.

Its all about how quickly you can destroy the enemy. I bet i can finish of a Anaconda faster with gimballed and hitting FSD than you can with fixed first hitting drives than taking out the Power plant or FSD all while the ship is spinning and moving!

To be fair, the OP wasn't offering an opinion on gimballed weapons one way or the other. He or she merely made a factual observation about gimballed weapons, and was asking for people's thoughts (discussion).

I understand your reaction (because of certain other threads on this topic), but this doesn't seem to be one of those threads (yet). So perhaps we can just discuss the topic in a civilised manner?

My input is that I prefer fixed weapons generally for their reliability and aiming skill requirement, except on the outer hardpoints of the Cobra (as another poster mentioned), where gimballed weapons are better.

Exactly and thank you Ensign Ward. I was interested in peoples opinions on which type of weapon mounts people go for, their application and whether or not the strategy changes as people use different ship sizes/class. The discussion around whether or not ED should have been a trading/exploration only game is for another discussion.

So what are turret weapons then? Are they souped up gimbals that allow for an even greater fire arc? I was fighting a Cobra with beams that were firing behind him and it was bloody scary.

I tend to go with fixed lasers and gimballed multi cannons. Preferred all gimballed when I started out due to my poor aim and technique but quicky changed to fixed lasers as I improved (much more effective damage). Stuck with the gimballed cannons as I target with the lasers and let the cannons do their own thing once the shields are down. Also very effective if you can turn inside your opponent but cant keep them centred for long.

Well to my experience it is good to stay with fixed weapons on the sidey, since it only has 2 hardpoints.
But i prefer a set of gimballed weapons to keep constant pressure on a mark
along with fixed weapons for greater impact.
Personal preference,
you might want to experiment a bit;)

I've tried all different combinations of loadouts on my viper fighter/hunter...

I've tried fixed (I am a bad aim lol)
I've tried turrets (THEY are a BAD aim PMSL)
I HAVE settled on gimballed weapons as they give me the advantage of allowing me to stay highly manouverable while still keeping shots hitting an enemy as long as they are in my firing field of view and the gimbals have them locked...

Yes i've had to deal with chaff and to be honest, when you are up close (under 200 - 300 metres) it makes little difference on a medium to large ship and even an eagle will still take a little laser fire inside a chaff cloud and usually I am fighting af a reasonable speed so the cloud does not hang around for long

You can allways deselect a target using chaff to use the gimballs in that period of time like fixed weapons.

I use fixed beam lasers to take out shields then switch to gimballed multicannons to hit the hull. I find most ships fly much more erratically/evasively when their shields are down.
