Has Anyone Tried Mapping Out the Edge of Populated Space?

Just wondering if anyone has tried mapping out the extent of populated space to identify a border / frontier, after which we're out on our own?

I'm thinking something simple 2D top down (always easier said than done! :) ) though I'm aware there's a heck of a depth to the galactic disc we're bobbing about in.

I've been working on a 2D galaxy map for awhile, working on a new site were everyone can log in and plot there points here

Obviously that's super limited, I haven't added to it for weeks. The new program im making will let the community plot their own markers, lines, and area shapes and each thing you add you can put txt data in there.

Fantastic! It's much slicker than anything I was thinking about. Nice work.

Will be a great tool if players are able to add to it too.

I was looking at a -100 / +100 ly depth and starting at Sol, working 'north' to find the furthest most system with an economy then moving along in 10 ly blocks tracing just where the furthest out 'populated' systems sit, to give an idea of the extent of 'civilised space'.

This is quite easy to do in game.

On the galaxy map go to filters and filter star colors by allegiance then turn off 'none' so only stars allied to the three super states or independent factions will be visible (I.e. populated space). You can then use the population slider to make all stars massive so they're easier to see. Zoom out apropriately and drag the cursor around. You can 'trace' the edge of populated space by finding the edge of the big cluster of visible stars. It's roughly spherical fitting top to bottom of the galactic disk, soll is the center.

You can even find the locations of the different super faction's territory, where they are relative to eachother and where the borders are by doing this.

I'd intended on trying to get out there, but the distances between stars were far more than I could jump in a newbie ship so I decided to wait for an Asp.

Exactly! You could get a holistic view by scrolling and pivoting the 3D view or, if it's tracked round the extent of populated systems in say 100 ly thick segments you'd end up with a series of 'slices' which could be used to piece together the extent of civilised space, whether Fed, Imp or Ind.

how much money do you get from exploration?

Exploration with the basic discovery scanner gives a welcome income addition to a beginner. depending on the systems and your thoroughness you'd get 300CR to 4000CR
I just bought a detailed surface scanner and I am looking forward to explore a bit again and see how much that brings in.
