3 monitors or Oculus Rift?

I've got a rift dk2. Its good for combat and general flying - stars look great. However reading menus and using the galaxy map is difficult so I don't use it all the time. I'd wait until the consumer version comes out which should be pretty close now.

I have both, if I had to choose, it'd be the DK2 no question but, that's just me. I'd rather be "in the game" as opposed to just having a really good view of it.

I'd personally do 3 monitors and a TrackIR over the Rift. The resolution/pixilation in the Rift is an issue for me - but I understand it WILL be fixed when the consumer version finally arrives. You have to ask yourself: are you willing to live with inferior graphics/pixelation and the need to take it off once in while w/ the Rift for the sake of improved immersion? Or would you prefer head tracking and higher quality graphics and the freedom to look at stuff other than Elite when playing, sacrificing immersion in the process. I have a Rift - have played it with for a couple of days, and now never use it. I play exclusively on a big screen TV with a TrackIR. Note that I'm in the minority - most Rift owners love theirs. And if I didn't have a big screen TV or access to 3 monitors, I might be that way too.

Was leaning to the rift just hesitant on getting a dk. And I keep reading about this judder problem

The rift by far. It's like you're actually sitting in the ship. I use the DK2 and I honestly don't have any trouble reading menus or using the galaxy map. It could definitely be better though, don't get me wrong. The increased resolution of the consumer version of the oculus rift should help a lot. As another guy on here said, you need a serious rig for VR. My goal for the year is to construct a 6dof full motion simulator to use with my oculus rift consumer version when it comes out. Now that will be mind blowing.

Depends on your setup.. are you a keyboard users? because with the rift you wont be able to see your keys anymore.. if you have a nice hotas setup though then thats not an issue. Do you play other games? do they support the rift as well? do you need keyboard controls for them?

Also, +1 on waiting for the CV1 Rift.. you can probably pick up a used DK2 fairly cheap right now (at least I did in my area) because a lot of people are waiting for the new version for the better resolution..

I have 3 24" monitors and an EDTracker, love the immersion but....I'll get an OR once CV1 comes out.

I like the wraparound of the 3 monitors and the fact that I can see the keyboard and my HOTUS and take notes but from what I have seen I will gladly give that up for the CV1.

I haven't tried a rift yet, but certainly would like to. I do have some questions/concerns I need answered first regarding eye strain and focus for us old timers that use reading glasses. If those are ok I will give it a try eventually, but for now my 3 24" 1920X1200 monitors work really well. I'm running an "old" Core i7-950 with an Nvidia GTX 770 on a Fiber optic 60/60 line. It all runs really smooth with no need to dump more cash into hardware. I also have concerns that I would need to build better hardware to support the rift. it is a bit hard to justify building a new system just to make the move. the price reward equation doesn't feel right just yet.

I had 3 x 4k, and still I will never ever look back to that resolution since rift is a totally different experience. There's nothing like being 'in' a spaceship rather than being 'at' the arcades.

Thoughts?

Trying to go for that immersion and th rift right now is only development kits correct?

Don't waste your money on 3 monitors. Instead spend it on reinforcing your PC with 4k capable tech. The rift will eventually be 4k. You will need the tech to drive it. Also invest in a great headset and sound card for true immersion. I have got the dk2, and payed through the ass for it with taxes and shipping, I have yet to regret it.

At this stage I'd go with 3 monitors and TrackIR (EDTracker for me) instead of the DK2. I like the DK2, love it actually but I couldn't play the game for as long as I do with it. It's great for playing with sometimes, but not all the time. CV1 might be a different story though. But at this point we'll see CV1 (hopefully) within a year, so buying a DK2 would be a waste, just get some monitors/TrackIR and wait for CV1 to launch. You'll most likely need to upgrade GPU/CPU and who knows what will be out by then.

Go for the Rift but wait for the consumer version. I've had several opportunities to try it out and it's not like that 3D .

VR isn't a gimmick, it's a brilliant innovation that allows for an amazing range of possibilities and experiences.

A little anecdote: Me and a few friends went to the last PAX Aus. The queue for the Rift booth was unsurprisingly huge, but of course the obvious solution is to go hunt for little indie booths that had the Rift. Soon enough we found one with a two-player spaceflight arcadey shooter thing, and a horror game. While I waited to secure a chance to try the spacefighter game, my friend sat down to try the horror game. About 30 seconds after he'd sat down with the Rift on, he got up and joined me again. When I asked what was wrong he said "I didn't want to move, it was too immersive".

Two completely different experiences so it's difficult to say one is better than the other, it's just preference. For the past 7 years or so I have been using TrackIR with multi widescreen TV's, without a doubt it is an awesome experience. The rift is whole different ball game, it kind of ruined a lot of games for me, it's so immersive that any other setup is sub par to me. It doesn't matter how hi res a screen is, it wont put you 'In' the simulation.

I only bought the rift by chance while looking for a replacement to my trackIR

You really have to ask your self, do you want super high resolution on a screen, or do you want to be inside the simulation, real size 3D in 1920x1080 for the next 12 months or so.

well hold on a second.

I would suggest to target any 4k investment in Q4 the commercial version is scheduled to be out in Nov of 2015 so there is a long wait and the 4k tech will just get better and cheaper.

Just an FYI to everyone I have two monitors now and I might get a 3rd one. I love the set up for all things computers, not just one game. I can watch a movie on one, play an AFK style MMO on the other etc.

Now clearly running one game on all monitors I am not sure if that would demand a dual card setup or not.
