3 monitors or Oculus Rift?

Good idea to wait a few days for CES. We may get an idea on a release date for the CV1. All we know from Oculus is that A) It will be months, not years. B) More like "many months." So probably between 6 to 23 months (under 2 years).

I decided the $350 was worth it for even 6 months of gameplay on the Development Kit 2. DK1 still sell on E-bay retaining most of their value. I figure I can always sell it when the CV1 comes out.

Note: There's a text hack to change the HUD colors to green. It makes reading 5x easier on the DK2. I navigate the galaxy map using my HOTAS controls (mouse is useless for picking systems), and I touch-type. So I'm good.


Second note: I wouldn't be surprised if at CES, Oculus shows off a prototype with integrated Nimble so you can get your own hands in the VR environment (like a small Kinect on your Rift).

Nov. 2015 is the last I heard but there wasn't much 'hoopla' about it so I agree with you that we might be more of an official statement at CES OR....standing next to GabeN at GDC while he talks about Steam Machine....

BUT VR Gear is using the camera as a 'see out of the rift' kind of toggle option. I want to try that

With the GUI set to green and DSR from 1440p I have no resolution issues. I dare say the text is almost sharp when viewed straight on. In the rift anything looked at off axis from the center of the lens will be blurry so it's important to look by turning your head and not your eyes. This results in sore neck after 8 hours straight

If money isn't an issue I would go ahead and get a rift, even if CV1/DK3 gets released later this year, it's just that good. You might want to wait until after CES however just to see if there is any update on the release of the next device.

Don't waste your money on 3 monitors. Instead spend it on reinforcing your PC with 4k capable tech. The rift will eventually be 4k. You will need the tech to drive it. Also invest in a great headset and sound card for true immersion. I have got the dk2, and payed through the ass for it with taxes and shipping, I have yet to regret it.

Already at 4k tech. And running dual 780 ti classified in sli.

This is great advice, maybe there will be an announcement at Ces my only concern about it was the version I almost bought the dk1 glad I didn't the dk2 came pretty quick with higher resolution.

I have triple 24" 120 hz monitors and trackir 5. Haven't used it a single time since receiving the DK 2 in early August. There was a patch that broke VR support for a couple of days and I honestly preferred to not play the game at all rather than going back to my earlier setup.

Having that said, experiences differ - I don't have an issue reading the text and tend to filter the pixelation out, so I don't really notice it all that much anymore unless I specifically look for it (and I have good eyesight - visus 1.8).

it really rocks - its big, has the right resolution (2560x1440) for the size and i prefer it definetly to a multiscreen setup - i got no dead pixels, strange lighting banding or anything else - its fast so no problem with shooters (tested far cry 3 so far) and the colour deepness is amazing - never looked at a screen with such a natural picture (i had a 23" samsung and an asus 3d 27" which is now my secondary...)

and the best thing is with your gpus you will play all upcoming titles for at least 2 years on ultra - im running it with a gtx 670 atm at around 45 fps in stations with ultra setting and smaa (far cry 3 same fps o ultra) but as soon as the gtx 970 gets cheaper i get one

I have much experience with both.

I have an Obutto racing rig for iRacing and 3 x 27 inch triples that I loved. I got the DK2 at launch and I can honestly say I don't play any other games as they don't have rift support other than ED and iRacing. The sense of immersion is beyond real and so much easier to fly / drive around.

As said the resolution is not quite there yet, but you very soon forget about it and with a little bit of time in ED you know the menu commands anyway.

The only problem is that you are cut off from reallife and so keyboard / note taking is a pain, but manageable if you are set up right. I can peek down my rift and still see the keyboard when I want to and worst case, route planning, I just prep before or lift it up for a breather as well.

I use a Warthog Hotas, so this obviously helps with buttons and commands, but voice attack sorts most other things out.

Do you buy now or wait. Well are you the type of person that puts off new technology or embraces it ? Can you afford the £400 or so for it knowing it will last a year before the CV comes out and you may get a little money back on the DK2 on ebay ?? Only you can answer that. If money is tight, then wait for CV, but if it is between triple cripples or DK2, I know where my money would go.

Unless you're supersampling, I guess it doesn't - I'm using dual 680 Gtx in SLI.

I recently changed the HUD colour to a greyish/yellowish white - kind of like bones (pure green or white felt uncomfortable to me - too bright - here's a sample), which made it even easier to read, but I didn't have issues reading the orange hud before that.

maybe I will try whitish instead of blue.

I also have the added problem of glasses so all the light is going thru two lenses to get to my eye. plus my glasses have more scratches on it then a cat fight
I can play and I can read but its pushing the limits of acceptable (the text). I have tried both low and high res

Since the cockpits do not even have the angle of view that a WW2 fighter plane had, both the Rift and 3 Monitors are a waste of money on this game.

You can already see everything out the front window and access both computer screens with a single shortcut key. Save your money.

Correct, speed / type of card makes no difference to quality only performance FPS. exception to that is the newer NVidia cards that can super sample higher resolutions, but then you take a massive hit on performance.

I need prescription google lenses. my hope is that they will have many to choose from buy or even take to the eye doctor

Have you tried contacts or considered laser eye surgery? I had lasik and it was one of the best things I've ever done. I went from 20/400 vision to 20/15
I believe the crew at oculus said that they looking into having it so you can get prescription lenses for it when it's actually released.

If you have one, go for it. I happily use three monitors and head tracking for games that reward the effort, like the IL-2 series, R3E, AC, etc., but there's no way in hell I'd have bought them for this.
