Player Comms: "Transmission not sent: Unable to connect to *Player Name*"

Has anybody else had this issue? The text chat feature to other players worked flawlessly for me up until 2 days ago but now I cannot send a text or even it seems initiate a voice chat with other players!

This especially wrankles me as I have added two players to my friends list whom I met just on my travels and they have messaged me but I am unable to respond!

I have no 3rd party anti-virus programs installed and E.D has always been allowed through my firewall etc, this issue appears to have sprung up recently, can anybody else confirm this?

I think this happens when the other commander leaves your instance such as jumping to SC or hyperspace.

That is the only time I get the error anyways

it's about instancing, you or them moved from the same instance you were in and thus you cannot communicate anymore. I think teamspeak is a more viable option

Nope, its very common for me:

Basically i can contact only those of my friends, who are in the same system. Sometimes i cant even connect to people in the same group in the same system and station... Instancing works really BAD for me.

This happens when you are not instanced with the player you are trying to contact, something in the backend is not keeping track of players, well, either that or FD don't want players talking to each other across the galaxy using in-game comms. My friends and I have setup a private teamspeak server. Can be done easily and for free if you use a micro instance on Amazon EC2.....(and one of you hasn't had an account before). Basically we've got 3 years of free hosting for it (3 people in the group havn't had EC2 accounts before).

It has been like this for me from the start. And it definitley has nothing to with them beeing somewhere else. A friend of mine can start a chat with me just fine, no matter where we both are, but evertime I try to initiate a chat with him I only get this error message.

This just started for me. I used to be able to text chat from the menu to friends in the game, or to commanders in the same instance but have been getting the can't send message for the past few days. I'm thinking (hoping) it's tied into some of the other server issues they've been having and will get straightened out when everybody goes back to work after the holidays.

Same here. Chat only ever worked once when I was directly next to a guy on my friends list.
Have never been able to contact anyone who wasn't at least in the the same system as me. Kinda sucks...
At least allow me to chat with people on my friends list from anywhere in the galaxy.

Replied to this in another thread but it's worth repeating here. You can open a UDP port in your firewall to restore comms. I didn't have to do this before, but this thread had a workaround: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11361

Was having this same issue and did the config steps as described and had no luck... Until I remembered Windows Firewall was in the way. Opened the same port in Windows Firewall and works like a charm. Can transmit and receive without issue.

So if you try the port forwarding, don't forget to check your windows firewall state as well as your router.

Thanks to CMDR Assimilator1 for posting the link!

Yeah, I've already read that. The probloem is, I have a dynamic IP and I would have to change it in the config file every day. So for me it's really just a temporary workaround. I'd rather have a permanent fix.

Yeah the dynamic IP's a problem... But it's better than nothing until the devs can solve the problem, assuming they can. Seems like they could read the IP address when the launcher kicks off and write the IP address to the config file or something.

In the mean time I created a shortcut on my desktop pointing to the config file. Like you said, though, a permanent fix is what we really need.

Yay, Wings patch coming 'soon'. My purchase was based on multiplayer, which is the game has and when its works its good, but compares as featureless to others. Basic functionality problems like this REALLY need addressing. Having played more than ED the past 30 years, a level of interaction between myself and friends (especially) is arguably desired before accepting MMO and multiplayer, as advertised, as a fair description. It includes this basic interaction and could extend to others; navigation points in systems, such as Conflict Zones and USS, Extraction Sites and Stations - there are many instances where the game creates solo/new instances. Many view this as a failure, for me it is not inspirational.
Hopefully the 'Wing' patch gets into this, I will critically admit I find the game 'positively tolerable and slightly provocative', but when social interactions aren't available, that sucks and feels like bad advertising.
