Ive been allied with all 3 major factions for a while now.
Just through trading and bounty hunting. Havent done a single mission.

I was actually about to ask this? Bounty hunting will improve my rep with the three factions?
for stations related to the mainfaction trading / missions with and without payment / assassinations / bounty hunting and a bit exploring
i usually collect missions until i got over 15 and then go get the items in one run
best is to take the time and search for a ideal trading route -> more profit -> faster rep gain...
it is possible and i see the missions but unless there is more information about the effects i wont rank it higher
you should ticket that - only reason i imagine could be you do harm to empire factions while doing "good" things for them - e.g. i avoid shooting wanted ships of any main faction

Should this really be possible? The Empire and Federation are supposed to be in a state of cold war. Being allied with one should breed distrust with the other IMO.
Yes, bounty hunting adds rep. Still cant find the link to a post made by the devs about what gives rep, but it was basically everything you do. Even mining. I guess when you mine in a system and sell it to them you gain rep. Or maybe where ever you sell the mined ore you get rep. But yeah, everything gives rep. 
Thats some rebuy cost compared to your balance. You just upgrade your ship or were you always sailing close to the rocks?

Space is a big place, maybe they just don't know. Maybe to the Empire I'm Cmdr Predatar, and to the Fed's I'm Cmdr Predatary. Even being allied with a faction, you're still a really small piece to a much larger machine. I highly doubt your name would ever come up in council meetings.
Just what I was thinking. That image is one (server glitch/boost into a staton/lucky AI shot/unlucky system authority vessel getting in the line of fire) away from a new forum thread about how unfair the game is.
