Just blew up my Type-7 with 124t of rare commodities.

I'm in a station, just hit my cap on a particular commodity. So I take off, retract landing gear. I line up with the docking bay exit and feel confident I'm right on target, so to save some time I hit boost.

I forgot I'm in a Type-7, and the top of my ship promptly slams into the top wall of the docking bay exit.

Kaboom.

I believe it's said that the most dangerous time for a pilot isn't when they're completely new, but when they have just enough confidence in their abilities to make a really, really huge mistake by getting cocky and stupid.

Lesson learned.

Hehe I was just about to start a similar topic. Sorry to hear about you loss.
I was about to ask if any seasoned pilots make silly mistakes. Today I just happened to have one bad landing no damage but embarrassingly careless. Just now after fighting with the Galaxy Map in the Rift (its pretty, but useless with the rift) I decided to launch from a station, jumped in front of an existing type 9 that was leaving and then there was another large ship coming in so I turned sideways in the slot to avoid, and the cobra didn't quite fit and I ended up tangled in the net and spinning. With Oculus on I got very disorientated and dizzy for a second. Warning from station Get Out Or Else, heavy breathing and then a kind bump and clash of shields from the approaching ship reorientated me so I could see that a quick burst of reverse would get me out of the station. Phew!. That'll teach me to get impatient.

Yup similar here, forget to get landing permission, tried to back out the slot but two NPC Asps where doing a tango behind me.

There was a calm sort of inevitability to the whole thing as 500k whent down the toilet. Being an EVE vet I took the loss in my stride, stayed calm checked the insurance carefully before selecting continue, logged out and made a nice cup of tea.

Same thing happened here. I had 10x my buyback in reserve, so this was a hiccup rather than a disaster. If there's one thing I've learned from playing EVE, it's how to take a loss, dust myself off and keep going.

Don't retract the landing gear until you are outside the station. You can't boost with gear down.

I don't recommend passing through the airlock with either landing-gear and/or Cargo-scoop deployed - it may cause fatal collision.
I know that this is true for the Imperial Clipper, since i decided to do a "Stuka-style" deceleration-maneuver half-way through the airlock and just saw a 1,3 mil + 2,7 mil in cargo wreckage flyby, with a nice "eject" warning. Insta-gib ftl :/

Yep, I learnt a valuable lesson this morning in my Asp, rushing out the station, trying to jump ahead of a NPC Python and I'm full throttle, retracting landing gear, thrusting up and pointing at the exit, whack boost to get out ahead and find myself slamming into the wall just above the slot as my thrusters took me that little too far....1.3 mil down with cargo and insurance....not as bad cost wise as you I would imagine but what a waste anyway.

I am now taking my time, not jumping the queue unless there's loads of room and not boosting until I can see clearly out the slot....this game can bite your behind if you get overly cocky

Yet another reason to have left over credits to cover insurance and a full load twice over I think!

Complacency nearly killed me yesterday.

I was approaching a station in my Cobra and was almost lined up about 3Km from the mail slot when I got lazy and went to hit the "1" key to request docking but instead hit "TAB".

I immediately puckered up and tried my best to brace for impact but instead made it thru. Yay!!

I quickly requested docking permission. (heck it was worth a try)

Did the 180 turn and hit Boost again and as I passed back thru the slot, the trespass timer was down to "6 seconds". I boosted a second time to get far away and had a virtual change of underwear!
