Want to explore, have only 2.3 million credits.

Forget about the Adder. It's a fantastic low-budget transporter/miner, but for exploration it's crap due to it's windows. Sure, if you only want the scans it's viable, but if you want some good sights too the Adder just won't cut it.
The best low-budget explorer out there is the Hauler. Period. Great visibility in that ship, long range and you can get a full fuel-tank within 3 to 5 seconds depending on the range of your last jump.

When I'm back from my actual trip I want to try the Type6. Not sure if it will work, but visibility is great and range looks promising. My biggest concern is quick fuel scooping. Time will tell.. so far I'm happy with the Hauler.

I think I'm right in saying that the exploration system only remembers the last 200 systems you have visited.
So only that scanning data is saved, and that's all you can sell.
There are several threads complaining about this, so be aware of it.
It appears that you need to come back and sell your data fairly regularly until it gets fixed.

I won't be coming back until it is fixed then. Hopping back 8000ly's just ain't happening !!!

This is where I am currently, NGC6357 !!

A border station means a station on the edge of known space - basically every station has a 500LY radius bubble within which NPC's can occur. If you are more than 500LY from the closest station to you, you're safe from NPC's (Unless and until Frontier toss in surprises like a Thargoid resurgence)

You don't really need the Advanced Discovery Scanner. Sure, it makes life easier, but you can quickly learn to spot the tell-tale pattern of a distant star surrounded by planets. Once you see something that looks promising, fly towards it at full supercruise and vary your flight path. If you see it moving relative to the background stars - you know you're onto something! More fun than just pressing the "Advanced Discovery Scanner" button. :)

Having the advanced discovery scanner is great because you can do travel scans. You enter a system, pop the D Scan, and move on to the next system. This whole process from arriving to hearing "Frame shift drive charging" takes less than 15 seconds and nets you 201 - 6000 credits per system. It's a major pain in the bum to sell exploration data. Yesterday i spent several hours just clicking sell - confirm over and over again. Each transaction would take several seconds and i had over 1500 transactions. I wanted to tie a noose around my neck and jump out of the window...

I'm a long range explorer (currently ~7000 LY from Sol) and I agree with the general sentiment of others. If you're planning a trip outside a 500 LY radius from populated space then get rid of your shields and weapons, they're just dead weight (or rather mass) which only serve to limit your jump range. Get yourself the Advanced Discovery Scanner, Detailed Surface Scanner & the best FSD you can afford. Everything else should be class D or even underclass to bring your overall mass down, thereby increasing your jump range.

Actually it only displays up to 200 but if you have more than 200 and go down to the bottom grouping of 20 systems it will keep generating a list of 20 until such times as you actually have less than 200 to sell at which time the list will start getting shorter. I sold maybe 500 system scans the last time I came in.

This is what I thought/experienced after my last trip. Reassuring to know it worked ok for you Harbinger, as I'm out by NGC 6537 (pic a few posts above). I've lost count of the systems I've scanned, I did a shed load at the Cat's Paw Nebula alone.

I'm running a T6 right now as a trader, but it could certainly easily convert to an exploration vessel. It's not cheap at over 1mil, but it has an impressive jump range when empty and stripped down. The view is decent, but the bars in the canopy are kind of annoying for viewing pleasure and screenshots. It's still a better view than the hauler or adder. Rather be in an asp though, but it's just outside my price range.

A further question for explorers ... once a system has been explored, and the data sold, does it remain explored 'forever', ie.... are we slowly chipping away at that 400 billion?

What should I do? Advanced scanner a lone costs 1.5 million. I basically want to go out of civilized space for a week or so, then come back later to sell stuff.

Any suggestions on ship and parts to buy?

I found the Adder was a good ship for exploration once kitted out with a good FSD. I'd say advanced scanner was required on this boat as the cockpit visuals are limited and it's hard to use the parallax trick when you can't see! A Lakon type 6 could also make a great cheap 'Asp' alternative. Lots of glass and a lot of fun to fly.

I wouldn't count on that, maybe you will not encounter any life players anymore but you can stumble on some nasty NPC pulling you out of SC.
Can confirm NPCs. They come in two varieties, either interdicting you or waiting for you to not pay attention before interdicting you.

Many people will say "you don't need to see outside because you have the Advanced discovery scanner", but I am not yet tired of the sights, dreaming of actually seeing the stars, taking pretty screenshots etc. So the canopy on the Adder and Hauler really annoy me as they are so cramped. I wish there were a decently priced ship with a big canopy and good jump range. Until then, trading.
