Is there a skill to avoid "friendly fire" incidents?

I think this is the 5th similar thread I've cross posted this into... I do wish people would read what's already there instead of starting new, identical ones. Oh well, here goes again...

Sandmann, sorry to ruin your weekend with a query that, despite searching, I couldn't find an answer to that I wanted; if I upset you that much for asking a simple question, please feel free to ignore me!

Don't worry about it. I've never understood the whole "you aren't supposed to ask a question that has ever been asked before" attitude.

Your concerns are valid as the system is kind of dumb, you just have to be very aware of the dumb ass AI. I suspect a lot of what we see is placeholder behavior. They will continue to improve things, I'm sure.

Personally, whenever I hear the "puff" sound of warping ships, I look at scanner and check them out. If they're cops I just make sure I'm the closest ship to the target than they are. (This is part of the reason why I don't listen to any music when gaming too... cuz I need to hear gaming sound cues).

And if I see one of those dots moving close to me I just stop firing and move away to another spot.

And if the cops are bringing my target's hull down to under 10%, I boost ahead of the cop and make sure to get in the final kill shot or else I get no money :p

So far, I haven't had a "friendly fire" incident at all doing this.

ps: There should be a way for us to lodge a complaint against the cop that accidentally hits me though. It's rather unfair a stray shot from a player gets a fine, but if they accidentally shoot us, nothing happens...

When you fly with other players you can disable friendly fire bounty thing with the right panel option under functions "Report crimes against me"

I would recommend disabling this at all times as the AI hurts more than they help, for me at least. I don't even want them around.

The AI is fantastic abd full of flavour, and one-hit death warrants are suitably dangerous for a game called Elite: Dangerous as opposed to being called Semi-Competent: Pansy

lol... nicely said. +1 to you sir.

In a game where "loitering is an offence punishable by death" and blocking the station entrance gets you "removed with extreme prejudice", why on earth do people expect to get away with a slap on the wrist for "accidentally" shooting cops who are doing their job?

Common sense and realism within the game. It's nonsensical for them to try to murder a former ally over a meaningless accident that is more often than not their fault. Seriously, basic stuff here.

There is also no danger to this system, just annoyance. It's easy to leave and clear the fine. Use your head!

They changed this already due to constant whine, I think if you've hit the ship within the last 10 seconds before it pops you still get the bounty.

Yeah you keep on saying that, while IGNORING that it's consistent with the rest of the game universe. If the cops DIDN'T shoot at you it would be nonsensical.

If hitting security is so common its become an annoyance to keep returning to clear your fine then clearly you are doing it wrong.

It's not consistent. Notice how the stations warn you when you make a minor mistake? Works pretty well, doesn't it?

Please, start applying just a little brain power here. It's all I ask. The stations warn you, so could the cops. There is a reason nearly every game does this. Common sense.

Elite is even worse with it's use of trigger happy turrets and crowded, close quarters combat in terms of friendly fire (combat itself is great, don't get me wrong). Current AI system is at odds with current game design.

It's not consistent. They are offering rewards for you to be there. Station security is a necessity to keep people moving and the station clear. Notice how the stations warn you when you make a minor mistake? Works pretty well, doesn't it?

No, the POLICE don't offer the rewards, they are doing their job. The FACTIONS offer the rewards and you as a CIVILIAN bounty hunter do not work WITH the police, you more often than not get in their way then complain when they react.

The reaction of the police is THE SAME as the reaction of the stations.. therefore IT'S CONSISTANT and doing it differently wouldn't be.

Please, start applying just a little brain power here. Just a little. It's all I ask.

If you insist on throwing random insults just because people disagree with you, I will insist on reporting you for it. Please refrain.

When you shoot at station it does shoot back at you just like cops, this is no minor mistake.

Well that does make sense as there's no reason to be shooting in a no fire zone to begin with unless you are causing trouble. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison there.

The friendly fire is someone trying to kill a target that system security will pay them to kill and if system security flies in front of them and gets grazed, the entire faction wants to murder you. Not so well designed.

Because they react in a nonsensical manner due to incomplete AI. Other games solved this problem decades ago. You are working with them in the sense they know you are there and they see you fighting the enemy. To have them turn on you so easily is just dumb.

I dont get it.

Why should there be no consequence for shooting at police?
Why when its so rare and a few mins to resolve anyway is it still a major issue for some?

People just seem to want to do what they like, be constantly rewarded and never punished.

You need to stop confusing the police with the factions, and yourself with the police. The factions will pay you to kill the bad guy. They won't pay you to shoot the police. The police are doing their job and don't want you around. If you shoot them they will shoot you back. The station will also shoot you back. You are NOT allowed to shoot cops, OR stations. Period. Doesn't matter what you intended. Doesn't matter if your intended target has a bounty. Shooting the cops will get you shot.

Nah, it's just that anyone being reasonable realizes that accidents occasionally happen. Knowledage players know that the AI and game mechanics like turrets make it even worse.

Hopeless fanboys defend the status quo. Always and forever.

And with all his irrational and baseless claims shot down, having no case left to make in defence of player laziness, he reached into his bag of tricks and just falling shy of Godwin's Law, he pulled the 'fanboi' card.

Yes exactly, the AI is not intelligent enough to recognize a meaningless accident. Let's hope it can be improved to where they can act in a halfway intelligent manner. Not sure why we are debating a problem that got solved almost immediately upon the genre's creation...

Feel free to ignore the content if you wish, but I think you're still just mad over that other thread where you got shown up. Again, you guys are talking like this is some kind of new, mysterious problem. Pretty strange, don't you think?

It doesn't make sense and in game mechanics make it even worse. This isn't even complicated guys, you don't have to always pretend the game is perfect. Total waste of time.
