Frontier Responds to recent DB issues

Just in case anyone misses it and to bring some proportion to all the threads about the problem:

From Frontier as posted in the INC article:

Hello,

On January 1st 2015 at 11pm GMT we had an issue with one of our databases . One of our engineers spotted this immediately and removed the database from circulation. This took around 2 hours to complete, test and make live to commanders. In this time, a relatively small number of commanders were affected by failed transactions and small losses in credits. These commanders should have received their refunds, along with a 20% bonus as in previous instances.

If you are still having problems, please create a support ticket for our customer support team via https://support.elitedangerous.com.

Finally, we do have 24/7 server engineer coverage over the holiday period to catch problems such as these. However, to further communicate these issues to commanders, we are currently working on creating a server status page where we can communicate any immediate issues or known problems. This should be live within the week.

Apologies again for the disruption in service.

Fly safe commanders!

Despite the minor issues that seem to pop up. Frontier has been on top of fixing anything that comes around and has been very open with what is going on. Their launch was fantastic in my eyes, I was able to play immediately without any issues myself. Compared to other mmos that have been released where I've had 10-14 hour queue times just to log in (who has time for that). They have shown to be a very respectable company.

So with that said their continued way of operation is just reassuring in todays gaming industry where publishers push out games advertising "X" and don't even get half of that.

Kudos Frontier ^_^

Sorry but lol, just lol. Ignoring the "fixing anything that comes around" part...

It's taken almost 2 days to get a response and it looks like that was only prompted by bad press and/or a lot of unhappy people on the forum.

It's also looking like :

"relatively small number of commanders were affected by failed transactions and small losses in credits. These commanders should have received their refunds, along with a 20% bonus as in previous instances."

It's also not right, since it's not resolved the stuck cargo bug, which anecdotally seems to be the main issue people have been having. Nor has anything been mentioned about CMDRs glitching their way to a fortune, whether intentionally or accidentally.

I raised a ticket but got past my particular issue, having worked for a large software vendor before I can imagine what it's like over a holiday period when something goes wrong and there's skeleton staff so kudos for trying to get it sorted as soon as possible.

Storm in a teacup. This game has been released for less than 3 weeks. Try writing a chunk of code of this size and complexity, with the same performance requirements, and then you can act all Statler and Waldorf.

Funnily enough it's what I do for a living.

And as I've said repeatedly, and what I'm saying above is it's not about the bugs.

Bugs happen and you *absolutely cannot prevent that*, what's important is how you deal with it.

Pretending they handled it well and giving them a pat on the back really helps no-one, not me not you and certainly not Frontier.

The bugs I can deal with. The really horrific communication is, to me, very disturbing.

So far Im willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and accept that they're taking a well deserved holiday with the families that they've been strangers to for the better part of 2 years while they made this game, however if starting Monday and moving forward they don't improve drastically on their lines of communication then I think there is going to be a problem.

They have mentioned bringing up a new "server status" page which is a step in the right direction IMO.

I'd imagine they also are aware they need to improve their channels of communication.

Still early days for me, and for them IMO. Lots of time to learn, adapt and improve.

people will still rage.

next will be 'well I know the server is down why do I need a page to tell me'...lol

I have absolutely no idea why this isn't stickied at the top of the forum, I've just reported it and asked for it to be stuck there, about the server status page: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=91303&p=1425887&viewfull=1#post1425887

Nice of them to update and let people know what happened, but what about those commanders not affected by the cargo glitch and/or money increase?

I lost connection 3 times during the problem, first time in a fight, when I reconnected, I was practically dead with no thrusters and had to eject, costing me my ship, flew back out and got back to the nav beacon, started shooting and then disconnected again and when I finally managed to get back in, I was in space, with a cracked canopy and no fuel, so died in space, so again I had to start again. Went back a third time and died straight away when I disconnected, so when I re-logged back in, I was in the space station.

I ended up losing about 100K CR in replacement ship costs (3 x 36K), not to mention the bounties I had built up during the day, so in the end I lost about 250K in total.
I then got fed up with the game and logged a ticket and left it for a few days. I have logged back in today and I have no returned credits, the ship is in the same state as when I logged out the last time and I am not expecting them to do anything on the ticket, as they have 18,000 to deal with.

If you make a game online permanently and put the saved games and transactions server side, then those servers and databases have to be bullet proof, otherwise people are wasting their time. Spent all tonight just making back the credits I lost, so I am back to where I was on the 1st, without any involvement of Frontier, but have lost 3 days of my holiday time and back to work on Monday

i find it worrying that it took 2 hours to remove a database server from circulation, however, 2 hours to test and make live sounds suspiciously like replaced not removed, which is even more worrying.

Doom. The game is doomed I tell you! The end is nigh!

Excellent, carry on.
