Is there a place that says its 5%? Or that its static like that amongst ships?
This will miss it's target audience by at least 20,000 Ls
EDIT: I don't think it's new players that create the uproar. It's experienced players who choose to fly commando who make the noise.

Is there a way to see how much insurance is before you buy a ship?
No but it's trivially easy to estimate. 5%
Take a look at your right panel, under status you will see your balance followed by the cost of your insurance to rebuy the ship.
Of course, if this is the case, it's already too late - you have to take off. Unless you adhere to the maxim "a strange game...the only winning move is not to play".![]()
You do not have to take off, you can swap expensive modules for cheaper ones.
I've flown without insurance with each new ship up to and including my Python. I prefer to trade up at the first possible chance I get - I only add a bit extra to fill the hold up when I've purchased. You take a risk but ED is not especially dangerous and careful flying avoids any issues. I do appreciate that perhaps some have been caught out by bugs and I feel for them in that case; there but for the grace of God etc.
