Why do players seem to always run?

First off, 99% of play time is as a peaceful trader or explorer, I have a bunch of Eagle's and Cobra's dotted around inhabited space but nearly all my time is doing rares and hauling stuff in a Clipper. Have made quite a lot of cash so decided to just cruise around and hunt for a bit.

Have done all the warzone stuff but wanted to test the ship out on some real players. Didn't want to be an A-hole, so set myself some rules, would not interdict a clean player in a policed system, would not pick on anyone harmless in a sidy/hauler even if wanted (I used to get myself wanted for silly things when starting out)

Headed to all the Anarchy zones around Lave - Every time I pull a Cobra/viper/Eagle/Python out of SC they run... Mass lock on the Clipper is broken, I don't open fire because it's obvious they think I'm trying to grief, would probably see a forum topic here if I disabled the cmdr's thrusters :/

I could easily upgrade the Engines on my clipper so nobody can run, but I'm wondering where are the cmdr's looking for combat? Should I join a group?

Hmm, did you try to comm them first? If it were me (I play solo) I'd probably ask them first if they are up for some sparring.

I play in the rift, do have a voice attack profile to send messages tho, just never use it. I would have thought the fact that I am pulling you out of SC in an anarchy system would indicate I am looking for combat. Hell I'm not even saying fight to the death, but at least let's have a little scrap.

Nice to see someone with common sense gaming style. :) That said, maybe its a bit intimidating seeing the clipper coming at you. :D Investing in a stronger thrusters could be something for sure.

Maybe FD could add something to give an incentive for PvP so more people do it, but in a good way instead of griefing. Taking someone on with equal/similar/better equipped ships and equal or better rank could build toward some separate title (that changes as you take on more and more players and win), and maybe some liveries you can buy in outfitter when you taken on and won over certain amount of players going by the same rules as mentioned. Could be more things to add that give people more fun to take on players and still keeping it "realistic" (no highscores or other too artificial and dorky rewards). The title for killing players could be seen as a sort of reputation amongst pilots and have nothing to do with politics, factions or the groups in the game. That way it stays realistic and not too "gamey", and is a fun incentive to get people to battling it out. Griefing; killing lower skilled/lower geared players will dial back on that reputation. Maybe even into the negative (bad boy/girl titles), but that could be an incentive to be a which might not be a good idea. just dial it back to zero where you have no reputation amongst pilots. :) Much could be done im sure to up PvP and make it fair and fun battling.

Well, what if they weren't looking for combat? Can't hurt to ask first, can it? If you stated your intentions beforehand they might have been up for a round or two, with laughter in the end and a friendship in the offing, who knows. Sure, there are no rules in open (one of the reasons I don't play it), but a bit of gentlemanly conduct may go a long way.

Jump in a MKIII for Open. People are more likely to be up for a scrap if they think they stand a chance.

I spent a couple of very lonely weeks looking for action in my Python and generally people steer clear when you are heavily tooled up.

The most hostile encounter i had was "Nice Ship !!!"

I hope this will change as more commanders step up into the bigger more powerful ships but for the moment if you want to get into a scrap take a MKIII to one of the hotspots and you shouldnt have any problem getting some action.

You're using a big ship to pull little ships out of SC. Unless they're really kitted out for combat and confident, they're going to run. Why fight somebody when you're at the disadvantage before you start, and didn't chose to fight.

Get rid of the clipper, move to something smaller, and try fighting people who are bigger/the same size as you. You'll get a lot more takers.

Alternatively, get a nice big bounty by picking on NPCs, and people will come fight you.

Thanks for the reply starjump. @KillaALF - Well true, I guess they are not looking for Combat, hence the purpose of my post. I have met a lot of great cmdr's ingame and on the forum, the game works fine for hooking up with your buddies or having a chat. I was hoping for a bit more 'random dangerous' encounters in Anarchy space, it seems all the cmdr's I meet are just traders going about their business.

I could msg them and ask them for a scrap, but then I may as well just hook up with some buddy's in a private group instead.

777Driver:

You know what you're up to, but they don't know what you're up to. There are way too many griefers out there that think every cobra is a target, clean or wanted. It doesn't matter what you do, they've set the rules, you have to live with the consequences of their actions.

You seem to have some personal honor, but you're not the one setting the rules, the griefer types are. They pull people out of SC and start firing immediately, no communications, just pew pew pew.

They've taken over Eravate, an independent and policed system, and many other systems, Anarchy systems are that much worse.

Personally, I don't worry about it anymore, I've gone back to Solo, I want nothing to do with PvPers.

Ok, well I could use my Cobra, but the whole point is to test my clippers strength's and weakness. A Python and Cobra can easily put up a good fight against a Clipper, I wouldn't say I am picking on small ships.

Seen this used many times but still cant quite see, what is griefing?

General consensus is... loose the clipper.

Also, are you targeting players based on their combat rank?

My advice - do it in a pimped up Sidey, much less initimidating, as others said. Prolly more fun, too. ;)

What did you honestly expect?
If I would be pulled out of SC by a clipper I would also run.
(this is assuming I'm flying my viper)
It's simple, you are flying a 22 million credit ship and I'm flying a 140k credit ship.
I know hull price isn't everything, but I'm assuming you learned how to fight on your way to a clipper.
Therefore, I would immediatly assume I don't stand a chance fighting.
Now I could "spar" with you, trade blows a bit and stop the fight before anyone dies, but I have no guarantee that you will honor such a proposal, even if you offered it before.

Furthermore, any second I waste on communicating with you is a second I'm not using to gain distance and charge my FSD.

Against a Cobra or an other viper, I would probably stand and fight a bit first, because there I know I could have a chance, but against a clipper I would just bail straight away.

Good point, No I wasn't looking at rank, should have payed attention to that. Alright thanks guy's, as HeavyGrooves said, perhaps things will change when more people are flying big ships. The point really was to test the Clippers abilities, I'll hang on and head back to trading and combat zones.

Hi 777Driver.
I fly a MKIII with military hull and gimballed beam lasers. Just made "Competent". However, whenever I've crossed swords with a Clipper, they have been heavily tooled up, and take my shields down in seconds. If the clipper is being hounded by the feds, then I jump in. If on my own, I tend to run after one volley, if the clipper responds with lethal force. Like you, I never engage a "Clean" commander.

Wanna bet? ^^

Haha, we'll so I' have heard :) It is the second fastest ship in the game, my distributor gives me constant boost, I get just under 400 with the stock thruster's, I dont remember any other ships being this fast, except the Cobra & Viper, and the difference is minuscule.

Anyway, not much need to upgrade the thrusters on this thing, it is mainly a rare goods hauler.

All players show up as Harmless at the moment, so only engaging ranked up people will cause you a long wait.
