Is the basic disovet scanner directional?

So as I arrived at a star out of hyperspace, my main scanner told me I had discovered one astronomical object, I held the button for my Basic discovery channel, that found 17 more, as I lined up for my next jump. my main scanner once again told me I had discovered an object, so I scanned with the basic discovery channel again and found another 13.
I couldn't have traveled that far in that short period of time could I?
So my question is, is it the fact I was aiming in a different direction the reason for my having discovered additional objects from the same location?

Twice this evening this has occurred.

I'm pretty sure it does not or is not supposed to work directionally. I think it's a glitch in the scanner mechanics that makes it count some objects twice. I've had similar things happen with the advanced scanner so I know it wasn't range.

The basic dscanner has a 500ls radius. Most likely by the time you decided to jump, the other objects you discovered were now inside that 500ls radius.
.
If you look at the system map after you jump in, and see any stations, they should be orbiting a planet or moon. If you don't see any, target the station and once you're within 500ls, do another dscan and see what's around.

Under conditions of bad lag to the Servers handing these types of Events (for Authentication), this can happen from time to time.

If you note that pointing your Ship directly towards the center of your newly found, unknown Sun doesn't do anything, have patience and note the approx. time it needs to pop up.
Firing your Discovery Scanner will often take a comparable time to register with your Ship's NAV computer as well.

If you see that your Scanners i.e. need a 2nd Scan (1st one completes but doesn't correctly terminate in getting the data), then you're operating under very bad lag conditions.
This can go into the extremes of taking almost 20 Seconds, anything much further than that can result in Error Messages (Scans unsuccessful, "Data corrupted").

The key to knowing you definitely got the Data from popping Scanner is the objects to show up in your NAV computer (NAV List and Scanner now showing any Planets you got).

When you note such bad lag and if it is persistent, it is usually better to temporarily Quit Game entirely (not just to Menu!) and log right back in. This gives you a full and clean re-init into the P2P Network and typically solves the issue (and you don't lose anything doing it).
Under severe lag, try to avoid popping Scanners and jump off right away. It shouldn't happen but some people report they (at least temporarily) lost some Scan data this way.

When you say "Nav Computer", I presume you mean the systems map to my left?
Unless I look at it first, scan, then look again, how will I know if data hasn't been stored?
I presume objects would appear on the systems map once I had discovered them that wouldn't have been there before?

There wouldn't be anything listed until your dscanner discovers them. Then you should see some "unknown" objects in the list. One you complete a closer scan, the entry will show the actual name.
