The higher you go the worse off you are....

ok, so this is not a moan or a complaint, but an observation from a progressive point of view.
.
I don't play solid, but try and get in about 3-5hrs an evening and make the most of it by varying what I do, I start off rare commodity run, do a bit of bounty hunting, do a mission or two and look around to plan upgrades.
.
I finally reached the ASP and have noticed a block in the way, I cannot see the added fun, only the added cost, I still have an A fitted viper but would like to use the ASP to continue having the same degree of fun but feel stronger. Feel stronger yes, fun is about the same, cost has dramatically increased in anything I do.
.
Is there something missing here, I know the old 'mile wide, inch thick', but did they not expect people to progress to bigger ships expecting more fun, Im wondering how much it costs to run the larger 'Med' size ships, my mate has one and it cost him 100k to fill a third of the tank.
.
With the various Cr exploits about i suppose it is not an issue for those whom choose to use it. Should we have some structure to missions that net you higher reward (rep, Cr, ranking etc..) for each type of ship (size class etc), haulers give you more hauling missions and are governed by min/max cargo slots (min being what the ship has when bought). Cobra/viper/eagle have more combat orientated missions. They could do this through USS as most of the missions are completed this way.
.
This would feel more reason to go for a bigger tougher ship, just a though/observation from a progressive point of view

Viper is already at the point of diminishing returns if you are looking at combat power as strength. Even CMDRs in Asp, Python, and Anaconda can be forced to retreat by a skilled Viper pilot.

You get an Asp if you want a nearly direct upgrade to the jack of all trades Cobra. Asp is a great explorer and trader that can fight, but if all you are going to do is fight, there are vastly more economical ships.

...for sure the gaps between certain ships are 'heavy'... Up to the cobra MK3 it's lot's of fun and discovery of the game... After that I hauled up to an Lakon T6... that's the first not so very easy part... then the ASP, this was a ton of hauling up and down (as there's no faster way than trading - all w/o tools or so!!!!). I'd say that from the Lakon T6 up to the ASP I hauled for a good over 30 hours.
Point is also not working the credit to the ships price, but way MORE as the default ships are worth-less nearly!
Now I'm in my ASP, hauling, and sometimes refitting for bounty hunting, which is and remains mcuh fun for me!!! But I'll have to re-haul soon if I want to grow.... I got the money for a TYPE7, but sill need for sure 10M more!
And then remains the python and anaconda....

Well, lot's of hours hauling! :)

This is exactly my point, there is no NEED to get a better ship, as the player will still be offered the exat same missions in a lower lass ship that is capable of doing them very efficiently, I agree with player skill as I forced a mate last night into using his shield regen twice before he got my shields down (he had a python fully A classed, I was in an ASP with B,C,D modules), whih is kinda the point of my post, it would cost gim probably a few hundred K's to fix a dent, as it would cost me 50k with no different way to quickly regain the loss.
.
Seems odd to me

The Asp can do anything you want to.

- It can explore better than any other ship (mine jumps over 30ly unladen).
- It can all the while trade (mine has 80 tons cargo)
- It can fight (2 medium and 4 light hard points)
- It can land in every station

I really don't know where the "added cost" is supposed to come from. If you have a good shield and Shield Cell Banks you shouldn't take any damage. You need a decent Fuel Scoop so you don't need to buy fuel.

It is true, however, that the Asp does not grant you "additional money" for anything, except maybe being able to only jump to valuable exploration targets.
But it is a great ship.

It is furthermore true that there should be additional things to accomplish with bigger ships in the fighting, exploration and mining area. E.G. by offering bigger modules that give a distinct advantage but only fit into bigger sized internal compartments or utility slots.

I now have a policy of maintaining ships dedicated to areas of gameplay. I slide between areas as I choose. Trading in a type 7 when I need more credits, hopping into the viper to go bounty hunting, getting in my cobra when I want to head off for an explore. I also have an Adder for those times when I'm trading that I see a well paying mission that needs a platform.

The only limitation is you have to physically go to the other ship to swap. So my exploration trips are the least flexible periods of gameplay for me (ie. it took me 3 days of real time to get out to where I am now. It will take me 3 days to get back, and I'll spend many many days exploring systems here, so I'm limited to exploring for a couple of weeks - my choice, and I could have explored closer to known space if I wanted to avoid it)

I tend to upgrade only within fields - I will at some point upgrade the Type 7 to a type 9. The viper I likely will never change because it's just sooo lovely to fly. I'll always keep this cobra, but I will probably buy an asp to explore in.

Valid point and This is my point though, you can still have these repairs from a simple bump against anything, no matter how careful you try to be. its the structure of the missions, im allied at a few stations, yet they ffer me the same missions in an asp asthey did way back in the eagle.
.
Another post above makes this solid point:
"...for sure the gaps between certain ships are 'heavy'... Up to the cobra MK3 it's lot's of fun and discovery of the game... After that I hauled up to an Lakon T6... that's the first not so very easy part..."
.
The most fun I had was getting to the cobra and then fitting it out, I tried everything in the cobra and the returns felt right for that ship. The asp it feels wrong doing the same things less efficiently (Cr Wise).

Don't want to spoil your fun, but a fully kitted Viper would have blown up within 15 seconds of Fire from the Python I steered.

Sounds like you're not filling all of your hard points.

Less than 15 seconds of sustained fire from another Viper can kill a decked out Viper.

There's simply no running away from that insane firepower it offers and no Chaff cloud is big enough to hide from it.

I do not think you could kill my Viper with your Python. I'm not confident I could kill your Python, but I am confident that I could at least tickle your shields a few times and get away without hull damage.

Also, I never mount chaff.

So how do you manage to freely switch between ships? Aside from parking them all in one system I haven't found a solution yet. And that means the first system you buy your addon ship will be your home base.
.
That to me already limits the uses as exploring will be completely out of the question with such a setup.

Very good point here

Anything smaller than another Python or Anaconda I basically stopped taking serious - as their firepower didn't do much against my Class 6 Shields anyway.

Yeah, big ships can almost ignore smaller NPCs, but even the smaller ships can still kill any NPC ship fast enough to make them the more economical bounty hunters.

I park all my ships in Shinrarta.

Good, central location, relative to populated areas, and the cheapest parts with a very nice selection.

You can also build a ship specifically to taxi around and just sell it when you get to where you have another ship.

For me personally, the bigger ships are not fun (from what I've gotten too anyway). Kitted up my ASP, eventually shelved it after a day of playing around with it. Went back to a Viper kitted out, had a blast. The fact that on the bigger ships you need to do some serious trading grind to cover insurance costs etc sucks the fun out of the game, especially after you have just grinded through trading to get the darn ship. Save up for new ship, get new ship, start saving for next ship etc, cycle repeats itself, finally get last ship, not too sure what to do...

I think it's a matter of what is your goal in the game. My goal is to get an ASP for exploration.
I know it's going to be tedious until I get there, but it's part of the game and I deal with it. In a way it's like in real life (life is hard... deal with it), although we're talking about a video game ^^

For now I have a Sidewinder with 800k credits balance, and I don't really know if I should get and Adder or a Cobra fitted for cargo and why not some mining to test ^^

The few Players I saw basically ran away in fear (even if I just wanted to watch the show, retracted hardpoints and popcorn ready to go *g* ). Was pretty lonely anywhere soon, anywhere I arrived that way :p

I'm never in a hurry to run as long as I know I can.
