Angry and very frustrated! Config resets

Morning all, happy new year...

I have been playing ED from the 16th, like most have had no issues except for the well reported connection/auth server issues but it has never damaged or really interfered with my gameplay.
Last night I managed to get an Asp - kitted it out and then went to trade rares, got a full cargo load and headed out of the station, at this point I saved game and put my son to bed.
Later on I then logged back in and decided to add another module so about turned and gained landing perms and just before entering the station - dropped my landing gear... Or so I thought....

Boom! Boosted right into the entrance frame, got stuck and blew up...

Triage showed that all my controls had returned to default for my HOSTAS, yep you guessed it - I rage quit.

This morning with a cooler head - logged back in and reset all controls, played a little and then quit to do the school run, just returned and yet again my controls are all back to default, every time I quit I loose mapping.
On top of this - ED is asking me the hardware detect question on every startup.

Very frustrated... Something is either wrong with my system or there is a bug here. All files look sane, no corruption, is there a way to back up configs?

Do not start the game before plugging in the hotas. Similarly, do not remove the hotas before quitting the game. There is something else that causes this i think, but i cannot bring it to mind with this hangover.

Most of us has done something similar at least once. I was back in a sidewinder when my Asp suddenly decided to go full speed backwards of a landing pad during launch. Nothing I could do would stop it.

If you back up the custom.binds file, you can reset the controls easily

on my machine it's at

C:\Users\Louise\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Thanks for all your replys guys, I leave my setup as is - I don't unplug but good to know that this can reset all, very dangerous!

Thanks Kitiara, just what I was looking for.

Suggest you edit out your computer name. :)

Edit someone's already quoted your user name.

Someone posted about going in to that file copying Custom bindings to another location and renaming it, then you can always stick it back in. Quite handy.

This is madness, It looks like this also resets ones display/graphics options, only noticed when I tried to mouse out into another monitor.
Will bug report this.

One other thing I have noticed, The Asp used to hit 250 in speed, after all this trouble it max's out at 150.
I Don't know what's going on now, I have a feeling some of my modules that I upgraded have gone (all apart from my FSD) but it was late and for the life of me can't remember which else I swapped out.

The Asp should hit 250 stock though right guys? Pretty sure it did - my mass is half what i can be.

Just to check this is not an analogue controller issue - I set X to full forward speed, and it only creeps up to 150.
Confused, hope this is user error somewhere and not missing modules :(

Send a ticket into support with your hardware stats incl the Hotas and they may be able to see what happened. as mentioned in the thread saving a copy of your control bindings is very useful.

Strange that it's asking for hardware detection every time so it's well worth submitting a ticket.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

I've had this 4x now but the advice above is sound: plugging in the joysticks: controllers before you launch the game seems to negate this issue but I'd ticket it all the same.

Also, seem to be getting the Hardware Detection message only since yesterday.

With every server maintenance there are more minor bugs/ annoyances introduced.

One thing you could do to mitigate this issue a bit is to turn on the preflight checks in the functions panel. That way you'd find out if your controls have changed on takeoff. Might not be worth the delay though.
