these things are like this because it's not meant to be an insta click game for dumb players it assumes your a thinking human that would like some immersion it's elite dangerous not Simpsons taped out for heavens sake.
and you can't check remotely because we are talking about light years!
although i will happily concede that maybe some galnet adds from stations with interesting mods would be a nice touch who knows maybe we might get ingame radio adds for such things one day?
I don't see "Light Years" being a problem.
Consider this - if you have 1mbit internet connection and you want to copy something across the street, wouldn't it be faster to just dump everything on a 6gbit removable drive, walk across the street and connect it there?
Thus.
Station roster can be dumped into a drone. That drone is able to use FSD, move periodically to a central point, where "Light Years" are not a problem, and data can be acquired. Then, there can be another layer of drones that would radiate the information between systems. Even in Elite's universe that a perfectly sound and doable solution. You wouldn't have an 'instant' snapshot, but 'good enough' snapshot that would cover 80% of use cases.
I do understand the steps that were taken towards immersion. But sitting for 20 seconds at the 'outfitting' loading screen, without the ability to even browse the market, contacts or whatever is not immersion. It's bad design. It makes me tab out to read these forums, instead of being immersed in the game, which was the original point! The same goes for friendship drive.
There are dozens of improvements that can be made. What about upper left/right UI panels? Something to review your target, review your next few jumps, maybe something that would break down the information regarding current system and give us the essentials?
Elite is entrenched in the 80s aesthetics and busywork. We live in 2015 in the age of analytics, big data and automation. Every time you restrict the players from access to information or limit the functionality, they will cover it themselves with their own tools. Look what has happened to trade. In EvE for instance, you have tools good enough for the region you're in, that you don't really need outside tools to keep you in the game.
I've done a piece on the whole 80s phenomena here:
