Newcomer / Intro Beginners don't overlook the Adder

I sometimes get pulled from supercruise by Adders trying to pirate me. Piece of advice: Don't try that against a Cobra. Adder is a fine and dandy ship, but not a fighting machine.

Funnily enough against players I'll run against NPC cobras I'll take them... The Adder can turn and keep my beam laser constantly hitting.

But in terms of PC ships the 350-400k multi purpose ship SHOULD beat the 70k one. However the Cobra is not a "beginner" ship.

A Python with multiple plasma accelerators also makes short work of it. But they aren't really comparable fights.

how much money do you recommend having before plunging into a jack of all trades, exploration/bounty hunting Adder?

I have been pondering a Beam on top with Multicannons on the bottom. Is that the way you went Fire?

I went burst lasers bottom and beam top, purely because I tend to hit police with bullets and lasers are a little more precise. But yeah gimballed underneath and fixed on top seems the best combination.

In terms of cash, I traded in with about 80k as its buyback on the basic is so low. Then every time I got to 40 50k I'd upgrade one or two modules.

If ivdid it again I'd sort my power modules first but doing it piecemeal has given me a real "han solo" modifying as you go along vibe.

Unfortunately I think Petula may be traded in any time soon for a bigger vessel. But I'll definitely miss her.

I think you learn more by building the modules up and swapping them out and testing more :)

Mine is called "Old Girty"... after my late grandmother.... slow but dependable :)

I think I swapped over to a Adder with about 300K in the bank K-Rose... I like a bit of trading capital and Insurance cash

I'm learning to live with the Adder. It is not the "Asp Lite", it is the "Sidewinder Plus".

I'm slowly maxing mine out. I have almost all "B" equipment, except for an "A" power distributor, and "C" thrusters. Have enough cash now to get the surface scanner, plus insurance. 280+ systems explored. Gimballed lasers all around.

I bought my Adder yesterday and it's really nice.

Mine is fitted with 20T cargo and 19.33LY jump range when laden (25.79 unladen). It's worth almost 800k credits.
I'm doing some rare trading so I can buy detailed surface scanner, advanced discovery scanner, a good fuel scoop (the one I have is too slow) and enough credits for insurance :D
And I had a big fail on my first run with rare goods, not paying attention and going to close to some star (brown dwarf I think). Result, 175% overheat while jumping. I was a little nervous...

I'm also training fuel scooping, and I'm wondering if ships can sustain some overheat without taking any damage over really long period ? Because while scooping I try to get under 100%, but you can't get the max scoop (or maybe it depends on the star ?).

After that I will give a try into mining, just to see. And then I'll start my goal, exploration, until I can get an ASP to do more exploration

Adders gonna adhere (it's bad, I know =>[]).

They were class 3 yes, but class 2 are more than enough for trading purpose.

With the A2 power plant I have 9.60MW and I use 7.07 at max.
So you could even use a D2 power plant, but A2 as better heat dissipation and it's usefull for scopping, I think (not sure).

And the shield it's a security (usefull when you fail big time into a station ^^).
I could remove it to put more cargo, but I prefer to keep one so I put a class 2 in order to have one more 8 capacity cargo.

I've just ended a 360LY round trip with rare goods, takes time but makes credits.
It would be even better if the course ploter could work on long trip, hope it will be improved further.

So having spent the last couple of weeks flying my Adder on rare goods runs, with the occasional pew pew session in a Viper, I bought a Cobra yesterday. I was able to upgrade FSD, power etc so that the Cobra had the same range as my upgraded Adder, the only real difference being that id had to compromise the Adder by selling the discovery scanner to fit in extra cargo.

Is it an improvement?

Well, if I'd been flying the Adder this evening I would have done maybe 5 rare goods runs with the hold maxed on the trips (16T) and would have made 180-250k per run depending on the leg of the round trip. In the Cobra, I did the first leg with a single figure payload out of 36T, second leg with about 10T (bought 26T ofof gold on a stop off which I sold for a 25k profit, not sure that the risk/reward ratio for gold is worth it, having 250k in the hold is a lot when rares are bought for so much less) and since then I've been doing short jumps around Lave to try to fill the hold. So I've certainly made less cash in the Cobra than I would have done in the Adder. I did have the confidence to duck into a USS in the Cobra and take on a couple of Sidewinders, I wouldn't have had that fun in the Adder.

So, do I still love the Adder? Yes, I think it's a better rare goods trader than the Cobra because it's cheaper to run and I don't need to do the Lave circuit to get the hold anywhere near full. Is it as much fun as the Cobra? Not quite, with the Adder I'd go back to get my Viper before going out looking for a fight, with the Cobra it's just a case of choosing to scrap when I don't have a hold full of rares.

I'll give the Cobra another run to see if I can make good cash in it, if I don't then I may switch back to the Adder when I'm purely trading rares. And at some point I'll kit it with more scanners and take it on a long trip.

I got 16t in my adder by swapping the class 3 shield generator for a class 2 and retained the discovery scanner (just because I enjoy using it rather than because it makes much money). Then you can put an 8 slot cargo bay in the class 3 slot. Not sure how good an idea that is, since I'm pretty new to the game and am not sure how good an upgraded class 2 shield is compared to the class 3 ones.

I think there's a lot of good information here for new folks again who are trying to decide between an Adder or Hauler.

It's worth the wait!

Still running mine and have it pretty much max upgraded, just swapping out weapons as I feel to get the vibe of them. Even fully loaded with 22 Tons of cargo my jump distance is over 19 LY...

Give it a look, if you have more questions let me know and I will help as I am able. Fly safe!

The class 2 shield is really intended for Eagle and Sidewinder sized ships. It will fold pretty quickly on an Adder. However, if it gives you 10 extra seconds of coverage, that's time for the FSD to cool down after submitting to an interdiction. In that regard, it will save on repair costs, although they're practically negligible anyway.

I love my Adder! Currently I can jump21 ly unladen and 18ly with 16t cargo. I have it equipped with one turreted laser, one rail-gun and one multi-cannon. Going to keep this ship for a while.

I'm flying an Adder, I have quite a few upgrades on it now. I was wondering, how do know how much money I need in reserve to rebuy (insurance [not really sure how it works]) it if I get destroyed?

Thanks for any info.

There are other places where you can fill a 30-40t hold with rares besides Lave. Try Phiagre - Delta Phoenicis - Coquim. Having a good jump range really helps.

Indeed.

I have to admit that after raving about the Adder a little over a month ago the reality turned out to be... the Cobra is an all round better ship.
After my last post in this thread on 6 Jan, I used my Adder for a bit of mid-range exploring and a timed run on the Buckyball Run, but found the Cobra to be far more profitable than the Adder on rare runs. I did keep the Adder until last weekend when I traded it in part exchange for an Asp.
In use, the Cobra does what I used the Adder and Viper for in one package.

I still think that the Adder is a better ship than a Hauler, and great for starting trading rares. I do miss its manoeuvrability and the way I could hammer in through the slot and stop on a sixpence over the pad. But the Adder wasn't a ship to strike fear into an interdicter and despite a good jump range the view is restricted, so I'd rather take the Cobra exploring (although next big trip is when the Asp starts calling).

So to sum up - Adder is a great ship, but is definitely part of a journey and not a destination.
